The Islanders have a former Captain in Andrew Ladd and a Solid Defenceman in Johnny Boychuk that we would be willing to part with and we would do a lot better than Toronto did with Marleau!

^Trevor doesn't want to give that but IF Ottawa resigns Ceci that will be a realistic price unfortunately.

dude, really?????? is this your first time reading a blog or tweet from him?

NOBODY, other than the retarded front office of this team, thinks Ceci deserves 5 million......everyone is just kind of accepting of the fact that, again due to the mental retardation of the front office, that's what he'll get.

Good perspective.

CAP space becomes more valuable the closer you get to the beginning of the season. As other teams try to finalize UFA and RFA contracts they are going to need to move other dollars.

Next year is the entry draft for Seattle. Multiple teams will struggle mightily in rounding out their protected list and there will be attractive opportunities for teams with CAP resilience.

J.T. Miller might have been a nice add to get to the floor for the right price (the right price being next to nothing because Tampa needed the cap space more than anything, but the Genius Benning clearly dashed any chance of that )

If Benning made that bad of a trade, I'm TERRIFIED to see how badly Dorion would have done.

probably would have gave him Tkachuk and Brannstrom

Nothing builds anticipation for next season like juggling the numbers to get your team to the cap floor- ugh, sorry Sens fans.

It's going to hurt, but hopefully we can see the young players develop.

Ewww...but probably not far off.

Problem for the sens is the lower than expected salary cap is an attempt to reduce escrow.

So a 60m payroll with 10% escrow is only $54m. If escrow goes down to 5%, that 54m becomes $57m.

There goes eugene's budget for a salary dump.

When Boedker is currently the second highest paid guy on your team. Smh

When Ceci is about to become the second highest paid guy on your team. Fml

When Bobby Ryan is the highest paid guy on your team. 😭

Marian Gaborik is the second highest paid player. If you don't count the LTIR then Craig Anderson is.

Although this is still laughable.

Ottawa is the beneficiary of what has happened over the last few years. During draft weekend, I heard it described as the "weaponization" of CAP space. The problem is going to get even worse for the teams that are already in CAP hell. The Leafs, for example, may do some stuff on the edges (eg. Marleau) to get them through this next year. But:

-they still do not have an NHL quality defensive group
-they are incredibly vulnerable to lose a top player in the expansion draft
-they almost certainly need a third team to facilitate any trade they hope to make.

The Leafs are not in the worst shape by any means. Tampa, Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, Winnipeg etc., are going to see their CAP issues become even more onerous over the next couple years.

We are getting close to the point where some teams may have to move an elite player to retain the upcoming future stars on their roster.

This is the time for Dorion to do absolutely nothing. Sit back, wait and creatively listen. Good proposals are coming heading into this season and especially, next summer when we populate the Seattle franchise. Free CAP space is gold for those who have it now.

I feel like it's hard to get an objective read on Dorion without knowing just how tied his hands are by Melnyk in a lot of those dealings

If your boss is being super restrictive with how much salary/term you can take back because he's so worried about his bottom line I would imagine it renders making a good trade that much more difficult

These are actually the moves I hope they make. Marleau would have been a good add- Ladd and Boychuk are veteran type guys that this lineup needs to show an incredibly young roster the ropes.

Kind of like what Williams did with the Carolina team this year. From all indications- Ladd and Boychuk are those types of guys.

With that said. Don't expect Islanders to attach an elite prospect like Wahlstrom or Dobson to a deal to get rid of the contract. They aren't in that dire of a position to have to do that.

Maybe they'd be willing to attach a 1st to it though? Similar to the Marleau deal?

Remarkably- the Islanders have retained every single one of their own draft picks for the next 3 years- and even more remarkably- they haven't picked up any other picks. Totally clean record.

Marleau was a great move by Carolina because his deal is short term (1 year).

I think teams will desperately try to hang on to their young players, especially those who are exempt in the expansion draft.

Leafs, for example, are probably going to have to lose Kadri. If, I were Seattle he would be near the top of my expansion list. So, guys like Kadri (solid players on good contracts with remaining term) should be available at a modest cost (mid range prospect or similar pick). Ehlers might fit into a similar profile. Teams operating under a CAP crunch are trapped.

They don't want to take back salary. They don't want to give up top picks as Toronto was forced to do with Marleau. The best option is to move guys who you would likely move in the expansion draft.

Remember, if a guy has a no move contract he has to be protected in the expansion draft.

Ottawa needs high end franchise players. Someone is going to get over paid, Lets make it a high end guy.

I still say he give Duchene another high offer.

Or just for Fun, Offersheet Marner to a high deal. It would piss off the leafs and give Marner a chance to be "the guy" and play with an extremely young fast team that would fit into hit style so well...

Heck lets do both lol

Well you can't expose Tavares he is protected by his NTC (Kadri has a limited NT deal). Or, perhaps you want to move Matthews, Marner, Nylander Johnsson or Kapanan. Oops, that is already 7 players and we have not talked about Dmen or goalies.

Point is several of those guys will be moved due to CAP pressures and expansion.

Love the way Duchene played, especially over the first half of this season. But the Sens are now in full rebuild. It is 3-4 years before Sens become serious playoff contenders. Better to hold off on taking on huge contracts.

If, for example, you took on Kadri, his contract at $4.5 m is complete in 4 years (age 32). Duchene is likely a $10m hit that expires when he is 38. I believe a guy like Kadri makes far more sense to Ottawa than Duchene at close to $10m.
