David Staples‏
@dstaples
McDavid chips in on a season high16 scoring chances. Draisaitl in on 14.
Big game players, eh.
If only our scouts projected what Draisaitl might be and were as lukewarm towards Sam as I was. Damn, that's a lot of scoring chances. - GilPerreault11
I guarantee you if he was Canadian it wouldn't even have been a decision. It would've been him all the way. |

Good Blog Michael. I'm still very intrigued by the sabres rebuild. I keep looking at the Sabres roster and am trying to figure how GMTM is gonna reshape this roster into a winner. Less injuries will help, as will the natural progression of the young guys...but it just isnt nearly enough.
The dead weight just doesnt have enough trade value. What in your opinion, is the right course of action?
I'm of the opinion that they keep doing what theyre doing for another couple seasons. No more costly 'win now' trades, just keep developing. There wont be any playoffs for a at least one more full season, but its the right course of action. Hate to say it, but Toronto is doing this poop the right way. - Larsson_fan
moving dead weight will be key, as there is a bit too much of it, so first thing for their immediate future may be the expansion draft...methinks McPhee will work with murray and I think murray may be able to trade a third/fourth-line center--Girgensons or Larsson--and a higher pick for a lower pick and move McPhee towards taking one of ennis or Bogosian at the expansion draft...
i'm also looking for them to buy out Moulson if they can't trade him for a lower pick...
if that works out some $10m or so will be off the books.
a revamped defense=the addition of one rock solid defender to go along with, hopefully, an infusion of speed and mobility in Brendan guhle...if antipin comes aboard they'll have another mobile d-man who's very heady in the offensive zone...i'd like to see risto paired with a defensive defenseman, possibly karl alzner...add in McCabe on the second pairing and either bogo or gorges and there's your top six...
as much as I don't see jack as a captain yet, he needs the 'c' and I think it might help change the culture of the team...i'm really tired of the passive, professional approach (nothing personal against brian Gionta whom I have the utmost respect for)...and that goes for the coach too...this team needs fire and needs to play with some aggression and I don't think Bylsma can get that out of them...I like the idea of Gerard gallant...he worked wonders with a very young group in florida before he was cast out by the analytics movement...
there's a hole in the top-six on the left wing that probably won't be filled this year...but the other five featuring jack, o'reilly, Okposo, kane and reinhart--is as good a young group as there is...there's some work to be done in the bottom six and i'd like for them to pursue dan boyle...William carrier will be fine down there as will Justin bailey, nick baptiste and evan Rodrigues...any of those four could actually plug in along side ror/Okposo as those two are a great pairning...one of Larsson/Girgensons and an unknown player to round things out at this point...I'd keep d-lo as a reserve...he seems to be playing much better as of late...
in goal there's Lehner and Ullmark in buffalo and Johansson and (hopefully) Petersen in Rochester...
as for Toronto, they're a real good team who are coached well and play the right way...take Matthews out of the equation for 21 games to start the year and I'm of the opinion that they'd be in the area where buffalo is right now, and where Edmonton was last season without McDavid....
imo, of course |

They've won 38 games, and lost 39. 24 in regulation and 15 in OT/SO.
They're the only team currently in the playoffs, and that definitely matters, that has lost more than they've won. |

I will disagree here what about that 13 game slump Matthews had in the beginning of the year the team around him stepped up.. where would they be without nylander or marner hell what about Nazem Kadri? |

They are 38-24-15. Do I need to do that math for you?
Everyone brought it up last year about the Sabres being just shy of .500 in reality they were far below it. |

15 Ot = 7 games in total
8 shootout losses
And you're basically saying they're not that good because they lost in a shootout? Come on wetBandit you're better than that |

Did they win the game? Yes or no?
Sabres lost a bunch of shootouts too. Do we give them more credit for that?
I'm just saying, yes, they're in the playoffs, and that's good for them, but they're the only team to have more losses than wins. Right now. They could eek in with 42 wins, but I don't think that's going to happen.
And the Sabres have allowed 5 fewer goals with this tire fire of a defense. |

I give him 2 more years, no rush with him - homiedclown
I know he's still young...
But he couldn't even stick in Roch, and their defense is not good
Not only is this kid so bad he couldn't stick in the AHL,
He's been in the ECHL all year... and been horrible... -13 in only 34games
And this is after he played an extra year in Juniors
Kid obviously had some talent,
But I'd be shocked if he's ever playing meaningful games for the Sabres |

teams below us last year
leafs, better now
blue jackets, better now
jets, wash
yotes, no clue why they still stink
oilers, better now
flames, better now
nucks, better in standings but IMO not a better team - homiedclown
With health...
and the right defensive addition or 2...
(Guhle should be in Rochester, NOT in our top4)
We can be next year's Bluejackets!
Ok... that's pushing it
But next year's Oilers or Flames...
no reason we can't do that if GMTM makes the right couple moves |

Only 5 teams in the NHL have lost fewer games in regulation than the Leafs.
The Leafs are awful at shinny and the SO.

Please stop with your incessant Guhle should be in Rochester comments.
He should be on the Sabres unless he has a horrible camp, and only sent to Rochester if he is truly terrible.
He has shown plenty in his very short time as a Sabre.
Don't place a guy somewhere just because it's what's normally done or you think it should be the process always followed. |

Putting shootout losses into someone's equation how bad a team is pretty pointless in my opinion I've always hated the shootout it's a gimmick
The NHL still doesn't get it the fans don't want it they would rather have an overtime of excitement
