watched only the last 5 mins last night.
got to get rid of this format and go to a true best on best tournament, with only 6 countries as it was when it was the Canada Cup. |

The reason they resurrected the WCH was because the NHL will not be returning to the winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea 2018 or in Beijing, China 2022.

I've been telling you for almost a year the NHL owners don't want to pause their season for practically 3 weeks, during the playoff drive, and risk their Star players being injured............ and this is why the WCH has been brought back.
Olympics will not be happening with NHL players, the writing is on the wall.

So would you prefer, in 2018, Mattews getting injured at the Olympics, with the leafs in the playoff hunt with 20 games to go in the season ............ or having him injured in September in 2020 in the WCH?
And if some Russian players breach their contracts to go to Olympics, that the NHL is not involved in, and that is also assuming they would be allowed under legal agreements between the NHL and the IOC, then they'll suffer huge consequences to attend a NOT best on best tournament.
Owners have the hammer, not the NHLPA, in any future Olympic participation. |

I prefer nobody gets injured
Its all posturing and part of the negotiations. Owners are not going to concede anything without getting something they want back.
The WCH was lame and I didnt care about it..I watched 1/2 a game and none of the finals |

Way to avoid the question ........... proves the point though.
I'll bet the Islanders owner did not want John Tavares to get injured at the Olympics, but he did.
I'd bet, if there was a choice, he's prefer to have him out of the Islanders line up, due to injury, for the first two months of the season rather than the last twenty games of the season. |

none of that matters to if they actually end up going or not
..players can get injured playing in the NHL
there is also the flip side.. maybe some players who are playing with bumps and bruises can get a bit of rest at a crucial time.
Stop being dumb..it proves nothing |

Any owner in the NHL can accept a star player getting injured while playing for their team .......... but they've indicated that they're no longer on board with shutting down their season, in the stretch drive to the playoffs, or losing a star player to a tournament, that they get absolutely nothing from, and probably lose some fans (US markets) interest at critical part of the season.
Not acknowledging this, is dumb, and proves you're uninformed.

Well you're smart enough to know that if the NHL decides not to go to the Olympics, then the Russians might have to deal with reality, and you would think that breaching their contract(s) and paying fines, serving suspensions and alienating their fans, who pay the freight, might factor into their decision.
right now, talk is cheap.

NHL owners have long expressed concerns about players playing in the Olympics, which forces the league to halt games for a couple weeks every four years. Injury fears typically been the biggest issue for league ownership, something that had been offset by the IOC and the IIHF picking up a portion of the insurance costs to cover potentially injured players.

“If I had my way, we’d never go to the Olympics,” Philadelphia Flyers chairman Ed Snider said Thursday night.
Snider said he wouldn’t go to the Olympics even if they were in Philadelphia. He noted the NHL was the only league to interrupt its season for the Olympics. He called them ridiculous. He said he hated them.
