Sedin's out, petterson in. but really it's not so simple. Rebuild implies replacing a core, that started when we got Bo
- neem55

Exactly . Some people view it began with Bo some with Petey. Brock OJ and Jake are all part of it. Some are taking longer but I don't know when it began.

Even as they were trying to fast track they were always adding pieces.

What are you hoping to acquire with those 1st round picks? Grade A young talent, you don't start moving that out for a chance at getting it.
- golfingsince

Exactly. So don't get all the lamenting over trading draft picks when the grade A young talent now needs support.

1)The whole point of gathering 1sts is to hopefully be able to draft talents like those guys anyway

2) Re-tooling with that core makes a hell of a lot more sense than the re-tool plan with the much older and declining core of Henrik/Daniel/Edler/Tanev/Burrows/Hamhuis

- Nucker101

Yes. Which seems to be what is going on now. They are trying to add to that young core with the moves being made. Trading picks and FAs are the main options to adding. Changing talent for like talent trades is more operative and fit retooling.

I've read quite a bit that this upcoming draft could be the deepest since 2003. So the 15th overall pick in that draft is like a top 5 most years.

Also, having other draft picks can secure your support players later on.

We would still have our pick at 15

My bad, should be a huge drop off after that pick.

I would be willing to say that the 16 th pick won't be as good as most years 5 th .

I think as long as the Sedins were here they couldn't do a full rebuild so it was always retool. By the time they left that had most of the next gen in place.

Last year I truly believe management tried to finish as low as possible coming back with the same d and not spending to the cap but petey and markstrom had great years otherwise we would have finished bottom 3.

I heard Benning say at the start of the year he is not sure if they are a playoff team . I think he did expect a bottom 10 team and knew they had a lot of cap space this year to make substantial moves.

I like PodK.

I think Petey has a lot of slick moves and skill like Jack . Hogs also seems like a very slick player so I like the choice of a guy that is more of a power guy.

Got to have balance. Woo and OJ will make the D look better too when Edler and Tanev are gone.

I was looking at the top prospects for next year , in the top 15 picks there are 7 players that are 5'10, five players between 6'0 and 6'1 . There is one forward and no Dmen over 6'2 . So I really don't buy the comparison to the 2003 draft. They had some really big boys like Burns Getzlaf Perry Staal Phanuef Carter Seabrook and many many more. Kesler was 6'2 and would have been second tallest in next years top 20.

That would lead me to believe these guys are smaller and more skilled . I don't believe there are 20 Patrick Kanes or Jack Hughes type players. Call me skeptical. I have seen Lafreniere play a few times. He is good but he is not a Patrick Kane IMO.

I will wait for all the hundred point players next year to get a better idea of the skill level.

Players are trending smaller. The speed of the game has made it harder for the bigger kids to keep up. Takes more time for coordination and such. So the ones that have size and talent to keep up to the pace with hockey IQ etc. are the real gems.

Same story every year about how great the draft is. I think it's like most drafts where it will thin out as the year goes on.

Looks like a lot of talent but you would have to be drafting top 10 to get it. That's if it's picked in the top 10.

That's what I figure also. I don't believe it is a generational draft at all . It could be a little better than this years or a little worst but every one of the top twenty picks is not going to be a top line player.
