Sure. Me too. So give me a reasonable example of how you would get someone better who fits within the cap. And by reasonable, you can't assume trading Johnson or Gudbranson - YouMeAndDupuis9
I believe that trading Rust for straight up cap relief is a smarter move than trading him for another bottom pairing defenseman. Taking that cap space into the season and using it to upgrade when the time is needed seems like a smarter bet.
Unless they are able to package one of JJ/Guddy with Rust (which is reasonable if he can sell them on the clutch two time cup winner bs that some GMs believe in) which would give them close to 7m of cap relief. There’s 2M for Pettersson. Leaving 5 mil for in season moves. |

Wait about 5 days and get Brendan Smith for 1m after NYR buys him out. - Feds91Stammer
I don't think he's a better player than Johns...but I could live with him for $1M. |

Like this trade for Pens. Look for Marino to forgo senior season, sign with Pitt. Will play NHL games this season, IMO
One positive opinion... everything else I read seems like he's not an NHL caliber player
edit: from rutherford: "John is a mobile defenseman who excels at moving the puck while also playing with an edge to his game," said Rutherford. "We are excited to acquire him as we continue to add defensive depth to the organization. The next step is to work on getting a contract done with him."
7 or 8 year contract? |

Well we traded nothing for him so he probably isn’t. |

Johns missed the entire 18-19 season due to concussion issues. You have no idea what you’re getting with him. Also smith can play either side. |

I mean fair enough. I'm just saying the argument boyd was making is he wants a better player than Johns. Smith would be serviceable and more of a sure thing, but point is its going to be hard to add a defenseman better than that.
You really think he'd sign for $1M though? I mean he's super inconsistent and theres a reason he's being bought out...but still...every team could use cheap D-men. |

Schultz is a UW buddy of Smith so I could see it happening and he will sign cheap because he has to and is getting buyout money. Johns would be a stupid add especially at the cost of Rust. |

Ok new game: Best position accurate NHL starting lineup of players born during the same year as you. I’ve got:
Johnny Hockey-Scheifele-Kucherov
Ghost-Dougie Hamilton
Gibson
That’s actually pretty (frank)ing stacked. - Victoro311
Skinner, Kuznetov, stone
Faulk, klingberg
Mrazek
Patrik Nemeth is best? LD, Id stick with making one o fthose two playing bad side. |

We knew that. Otherwise Pettersson would only make a mil which we all know isn’t realistic. |

No, it's meant to be a realistic view of our current defense. He's better than half our current defenseman and cheap enough to alleviate our current cap issues. LIkely would be our 4th best d-man, hence, improving the team. Pretty low risk contract too... 2 years remaining @ $2.3M
Again, the overall point is that I'd rather do something like this than trade Rust for futures that wont make an impact in the next 2-3 years. Free agency is obviously not the solution. - YouMeAndDupuis9
Trade Rust for a LHD that can push JJ out of the line up. |

Smith is a perfectly fine defenseman. Maybe best suited to bottom pair. He and Shattenkirk get blamed for the Ranger's defensive struggles because they were big money UFAs that were over-slotted there, yet they have the best relative numbers on the team. |
