and in the last 10 years has precisely one more playoff appearance than us, and their last deep run was when MySpace was a thing.

Oilers suck, but so do the Leafs.

Dream a little bigger than being better than the last place oilers, and stop caring so much about the stupid media.

One is currently in a playoff spot. The other is 30th overall.

Winning the draft lottery may have tipped the scales in the Oiler's favour

No Way!

Getting one of the best prospects in 30 years can change a teams outlook?

Well talking to some leaf fans in Lake Placid last week, they seemed to think the signing of Babcock puts the leafs in the "Cup contenders" group within two seasons, so just trying to keep things in perspective.

Kessel’s limited NTC is believed to include eight teams he can be traded to. Prior to the trade deadline, TSN reported those eight teams were believed to be: Boston; Chicago; Los Angeles; Minnesota; Montreal; New York Rangers; Philadelphia; and Pittsburgh.

This is not helpful to the leafs desire to "scorch the earth".

He knows they're trying to trade "Big Cap Hit" players, and the list is comprised of teams, ALL with Cap issues, that would not be able to trade for him.

It's like he wants to stay in toronto, and is trying to put the kibosh on any trade involving him.

- D0PPELGANGER

Yes he wants to stay in Toronto.. he has said it many times.
but I dont see him blocking a trade if Management comes to him with a deal they made to another team.

Also the cap issues are fixed my taking a cap dump back

But I thought the "scorched earth" approach was going to bring in younger cheaper players, and a lowering of the cap, to give room for it to increase in the future as the re-build proceeds?
- D0PPELGANGER

The scorched earth rebuild is to aquire as many young players and prospects as possible. They are a couple years from being any good so I don't think they are concerned about the cap as long as they have cap space when they need it. I would think a team that is in cap trouble may give up more in a kessel deal if the leafs are willing to take a bad contract in return.

Some teams have money to spend on players they don't want/need, to make trades work.

Other teams have penny pinching owners who convince gullible fans that they don't have the money to spend.

So perhaps taking back a "Salary dump" player with shorter term to free up Cap space in the future.
- D0PPELGANGER

yes..it isnt rocket appliances
Leafs take back a contract that has 2 or 3 years left

Example from a Team on his list is Philly

If they wanted Kessel or Dion, they trade the #7 pick plus Lecavalier and say Luke Schenn.. money going back is pretty even and Philly dumps 2 bad contracts/players

So if Philly took Dion's contract, instead of the Senators, and the Senators dumped a couple of bad contracts, instead of Philly ......... that's a good deal for the Flyers, but not Ottawa?
- D0PPELGANGER

I dont see where I said it was a good deal for them

I guess it depends on which posts you're referring to.

So I complimented Dubnyk when no one else was, now he's a top 5 NHL goalie.
And yes, I still think "Tanking" is luck. You've got to win the lottery and tank during the right years. Edmonton did not tank during the right years until the McDavid lottery. And they got incredibly lucky by winning it.

Not seeing anything wrong 4 years after those comments.

Doesn't surprise me one bit. He's such a treat to watch. You're going to see a string of Hart trophies going to Crosby, McDavid, or Price. No one other than those 3 will win one for the next decade.

Do you consider Riemer to still be in the same "neighborhood" that Dubnyk is in today, as you you did then?
- D0PPELGANGER

In my comment I clearly compared their "Situation" and not their talent.

So... how's that Shananplan working?

getting rid of Babbcock because little Mitch had his feelings hurt...... boo hoo, suck it up buttercup..... perhaps score a playoff goal or two before you complain about how the coach made you feel uncomfortable.

Got rid of Lou Lamerillo....... three years ago now? How many rounds of the playoffs have the Islanders won since Lou took over three years ago..... four and counting

Stuck with the unproven Dubass, who built a team heavily based on analytics, and acquiring career back up goaltenders... thinking they will become starters...... that's a good plan

Too bad they didn't aquire/draft a goaltender like Tuuka Rask, and develop him into a proven starter and playoff winner like the Bruins did

Clearly the leafs junior hockey GM has built a team for the regular season..... NOT the playoffs.

Well I guess it's progress that the leafs actually made the playoffs this season, when they failed to qualify for them last season.

Good work by Doug Ford getting those 550 front line medical workers and para medics into the game last night..... he must have known there was going to be a LOT OF CHOKING by the leafs.
