So, essentially, a GM needs to learn to negotiate and compromise?

Rick Nash is worth more to some teams than to other teams because they need his skill set more. The market on a professional athlete is much more difficult to define than the market on a civil war musket or signed MAF sweater.

GM's do their homework all season long to establish the value of a given player to them, these are not impulse decisions and they are experts themselves (maybe not in Edmonton).

Speaking of Edmonton - about a decade ago when Oilers and Canucks were both good teams and Sedins hit free agency I was really hoping a division rival (such as oilers) would offer one of the Sedins a 10m/year contract. Vancouver would either be forced to match or lose the chemistry advantage of the twins. It's an overpay for the team making the offer but it messes with a division rival and the team still gets a star (at the time) Sedin

Yeah, but be better at it and don't buy something for the wrong value. It's how those guys figure out value that's important and then confirm the value.

Good stuff but a bit simplistic. If I have an absolutely mint 57 Chev with 100 miles on it but the hood ornament is missing, I'll probably be willing to pay just about anything to get it and make the car perfect. But to anyone else it's worth about 20 bucks.

But apply that logic to a player with an injury or missing part of their game compared to others. It’s not really the specific item as much as the process

He is saying that the player is the missing part and is worth more to one team than to another.

every player has 'missing parts', no one does it all - player value really is team specific.

Recently From John Malloy/Jetsnation:
TRADE: Joel Armia
This one goes hand in hand with keeping Petan. The money isn’t drastic, but if you want to save an easy $1M, Petan can play in place of Armia and do an even better job. As fellow JN writer @Tony_MBHKY and I discussed recently on Twitter, Armia actually scored at a lower rate when he was Petan’s age; ironic considering the main knock on Petan is his inability to produce points.

Maybe Petan gets a chance now? Though if we sign Stasny the 3rd line will be Perreault/Roslovic/Little with Petan in the press box. If we don't sign Stasny Petan may slide onto the 3rd line. I would have thought Montreal would have preferred Petan since they need centers....
