Leafs will not be trading any of the big 3. Dubas said so on the radio today. Part of the pitch made in getting Tavares is that the big 3 would be here. - PatC80
You and I know that, but somebody else in here doesn't.
I'll take an over-the-top forward group vs. an over-the-top defensive group any day. |

I think its a little to early to start lying to Tavares. We have one of the best forward groups in the league from 1 to 12. Why change that now. If a trade for a d-man is made I dont think Dubas trades a player off our current roster. Unless, it's Gardiner. For his own mental health he needs to go. |

I heard Dubas at the press conference but do we think he gets the C before the season starts? Or later? |

if he gets a dman, it'll be for picks and prospects unless its a mind blowing deal for a #1 (which, it wont be) |

If you listen to the 1050 interview (it's up on the MLHS website), Dubas is pretty clear that they won't be doing much with the D, not until the year goes on and then if they do, they have the cap space to do it. |

First off, the guy basically said Tavares sucked and that he hated him. I have yet to see a leaf fan on these boards say the same about Mathews. the only thing Ive seen is some injury worries.
Second it still never ceases to amazing me that fans from ALL teams have this sense of entittlement that a player SHOULD waive their NTC clause should they have one in order to get something from them. IF the organziation agreed upon a NTC AND its in the players contract, shut it and honor the bloody contract.
Lastly, I know leafs fans can be a little obnoxious at times, and we think we land all the big UFAs bla bla bla, we are generally not hateful or spew rehotic like that dude did. - mel_vin
Kerry. Fraser.
Larry Murphy.
Plenty of hate from Leafs fans.
Every fan base has those fans. |

I look at the Caps D with Orlov, Carlson, Niskanen, but I'm not thinking "whoa, defensive powerhouse", there's some offensively gifted guys in that group, but they're not going to smother you.
They're going to make smart plays and get the puck out to a deep forward group and they're going to distribute the minutes pretty evenly.
None of those guys are perennial Norris candidates; I think Gardiner and Rielly are right there with them. Dermott may very well be next year too.
And PIT seemed to do ok with a weaker D group that won two Cups.
TB, you have a stud in Hedman, then McDonagh, followed by Sergachev and then... Girardi, an aging Stralman. Better D than the Leafs? Sure, Hedman puts them over the top, but I like our forward group better.
So who wins? I don't know, but let's find out.
Tearing apart our clear advantage which is our forward group to try to pry a top pairing RHD (and not a stud Norris guy, those guys are untouchable), just dilutes us where we have an upper hand over arguably the entire league. - gravyface
History says otherwise. Defense wins. Nobody is saying to trade everyone for defense. Just one guy, Nylander, for a more balanced team. Any team that is too heavy on one side or the other is going to have a weakness. Balance is best.
Crosby and Ovechkin are two guys the Leafs don't have, keep that in mind too. As good as the group is, they still aren't on that level.
Nobody is tearing apart the advantage. It's about balance. |

Lying? If he's improving the team, Tavares isn't being lied to. If the Leafs traded Nylander for Pietrangelo tomorrow, you think Tavares regrets signing with the Leafs and asks for a trade? (frank) no. Because the team got better. |

Dubas said today that they were in no rush to announce a new captain. They were planning on going into the season without a captain again. He went on to say that in his experience the times they had rushed into the captaincy decision they had poor results. |

Same thing he said at the presser. I still feel like it will be his before the season starts though. We shall see. |

This is a good plan and exactly the one I thought they should and would take. Tavares is the big name player and former captain but he's still the new guy. Much better to let them play a season together and have the room decide who the captain will be instead of rushing it and risking upsetting the current leadership structure. |

gardiner + zaitsev + nylander + sparks for karlsson + douchene + borowiecki ? - The Deal Man
If Ottawa didn't want to trade Hoffman to Florida, what are the odds they'll trade Karlsson to Toronto?
Karlsson to St. Louis, Pietrangelo to Toronto and picks and prospects to Ottawa however, that might work. |

Pietrangelo has 2 years left on his deal and Karlsson has 1 year left on his deal. Karlsson is a bigger impact RHD so St. Louis comes out ahead as long as they sign him to an extension. Also, Dallas is rumored to be in talks with Ottawa. If you're St. Louis, maybe acquiring Karlsson not only improves your team but also ensures that Dallas doesn't get any better. Similar to how Boston, Tampa Bay and Toronto were all in on Tavares because they're trying to get better but also prevent rivals from doing the same.
Manson I like but isn't a top pairing D. Same with Dumba. Chychrun isn't RHD. I like Parayko but I like Pietrangelo more. Trouba is pretty good. So is Ekholm. Ekblad should be untouchable if Florida has any brains. Ekblad would cost you Matthews, that's how good he can become given his overall skill set. |
