Carey Price is unmovable until he proves that 17-18 was an anomaly. he was one of the worst goalies in the NHL. even if he bounces back and proves himself to still be a top-10 goalie, that's still going to be a very difficult contract to move unless Montreal is willing to eat at least $2-$3 million of the cap hit.

i have nothing against Price and hope he bounces back but that contract is without question the stupidest thing this franchise has done since choosing Mario Tremblay over Patrick Roy.

I disagree, I believe most teams would jump on the chance to get Price. One bad year from injury doesn't make him DiPietro. He still is one of the best in the NHL

While it is true the Habs have seen much greener pastures the amount of outright hate and "piling on" that is happening out there is atrocious...

The leafs blogs say hi!

I think they could move him, but it's a lof of $$$ for a goalie.

And yes, he was not very good last year. But take a look at the team in front of him. Please.

C'mon EK, Price wouldn't get over 10 in free agency and even if he did the team signing him wouldn't have to give up the assets to get him at 10.5 in his current situation.

Tell that too many of my die hard Hab friends that see this team as a rudderless ship just spinning in circles. The family I married into are die hard Hab fans and they've all but tuned them out until some managerial changes are done! Athlete performance is a lot more scrutinized in the salary cap era than ever before. If you have a AAV that comes with a long term and high cap hit, you are only as good as your last game! The hate will get piled on if you don't perform up to up to expectations!

Price's 8 year deal will be an overpayment until year four, like most other long term deals. The huge numbers are not for one thru four, it's the rest of the deal when other star players are being paid more. The way salaries are escalating, who knows what any teams best player will be making in the very near future. Look around no matter what team you cheer for. Everyone has to pay. It's the cost of parity.

So i'm supposed to feel sorry for the arrogance of a gm and his wild beliefs that hockey is still played like in 2004....

In a few years Price will be wanting out, Bergevin will attempt to trade him, it won't work , then you will have a Luongo situation where he admits that his contract sucks.

The difference between Carey Price having an unbelievable season at 2.15 GAA and an Average coming in at 2.40 GAA equates to about 15 goals over 60 games played

The Average Goalie you can get for about 4 million, Do you think you can upgrade a forward position or 2 for 6.5 million that would add up to 15 goals?

Spending YUGE money on starting goalies does not work in a cap system.

Having to sign that guy till he's 39 is a recipe for disaster

don't forget, you still need a competent backup to eat up the other 24 games. And if your team is "built from the net out" then you can't afford it to just be "some guy for cheap" because you'd require "elite" goaltending to have a chance to win the games that Price doesn't play

So at best, you'd need 13-14 million tied up in goalies?

Okay. Ek probably loses most credibility when he launches a blog that defends the Habs not being a total shyte show, especially when he provides so much “rationale”..

Aside from a player just getting out of his entry-level contract, you shouldn't re-sign a player for more than 5 years. That goes for any position.

I kinda understand the issue that many have with Montreal, but that is much more of a big picture view. They have the same organizational needs that they have had for the last three years. They moved the most dynamic player that they had in what is in many ways a lateral move, but they did get older. Now, still with the same holes in the roster they are looking at moving another player...and I don't mean Weber or Price.

As for Weber or Price. Right now, even with Weber injured and Price coming off a very challenging season, they both would command a lot on the trade market.

Weber is instantly a top pair player who kills penalties and can play on the PP. He can be physical and add points. He can run the defense on ice better than anyone I have seen since Mark Howe (and that includes Brian Leetch and Nick Lidstrom). He is not particularly quick, but he slows the game down by his presence, much the way Pronger could.

Price, yes, you might need to qualify some of the offers. Yes, he might not get the same as he would after 17-18. BUT, other than maybe Washinton (who had benched Holtby to start the playoffs) or the Jets, I don't know of a team who would not have a long conversation about bringing Price in. He is a technique first goalie and may not fit in some teams, but he is so steady and as we have seen, he makes a mediocre team competitive. A good team he makes a contender.

Those two aside, the general mess that Montreal has on their hands is of their own making. Until they find a way to get not just one, but two real NHL centers who not only want to come there, but who are willing to stay...this will continue to be the case.

I don't know if PRICE is unmovable presently, but let's see how this season goes before we start predicting his return value. The NHL is about CAP MANAGEMENT more than anything else. Tell me an owner right now that will take on that contract 100% and give up huge pieces as well. I can't think of one.
