Matthews will sign for less than McDavid. Not because he deserves less but because hes thinking win. The leaf brass know exactly what they are doing when it comes to signing their talent. These posts by ek are a reach. Yes I prefer Matthews over McDavid. My opinion but I dont think it's all about the money for him. Gonna be hard to build a team around guys who just go for the cap max. That's the reality in a salary cap era - matthewsscores
Matthews will not take a discount for the Leafs.... all other players in the NHL are looking to players like him to drive the salaries up. |

Ok but that's still considerably less than McDavid. Look at the impact this kid has had on this team. He could ask for more but he will sign for less to play on this team. People just got to get over their hate for the leafs. They are a good team and players want to be here. |

Different players with different strengths and styles of play. McDavid is better than Matthews but I wouldn't describe them as nowhere close.

Yeah I don't think he's getting McDavid money. Unless that's what he's about (and I don't think that to be the case)
Have to lock up him, Mitchy Boy, and Willy Ny to reasonable contracts. If AM34 wants to win I think he'll do that. |

The oilers as a franchise have problems. Shipping out there best wingers and forcing there great centre depth to the wing has derailed any progress mcdavid brought with him. Especially under the premise that hall and Ederle were to expensive only to spend that cap on older terrible players for roughly the same term. Sure they made the playoffs once but with all of those 1st overalls, it was about time and it probably shows that Conner is incredibly important to his team and is being payed accordingly. Matthews is great, Tavares is great, kadri is an amazing 3rd line centre and the wingers are down right scary in the new style of speed and possession. Austin will take a look at his opertunity to become an instant hockey legend "simply" by winning the cup with this exciting leafs team and sign for less. Mcdavid is being compensated for living and playing for a city and a team that no one chooses to go to unless there being over payed. |

Kucherov signing is fantastic. Long term deal that is up when he is 33. That makes it still moveable with years left if need be because he will still be in his prime. I for one thought they would move him in the Karlsson deal, I was dead wrong. |

C'mon man.
You've said some silly things before, but this is right up there with the worst takes you've ever had.
Beyond Draisitl, who played ~51% of the time 5-5 on McDavid's wing, he has few capable options in Edmonton. Matthews, by the same token, had 80% of his 5-5 shifts with Nylander on his wing. And McDavid still outproduced him in a point per game capacity.
McDavid, could outskate, outplay and out think Matthews on the ice, no questions asked. He turned Patrick Maroon from a 3rd line plug in Anaheim to a 27 goal scorer 2 years ago. Draisitl's production with McDavid and without are vastly different.
Matthews is an elite #1 centre in this league, but McDavid is a generational talent and if Chiarelli wasn't a complete moron, Hall would still be on his wing, scoring 50+ a season. |

Mathews may take a discount, Tavares 11, McDavid 12.5 Kucherov 9.5. No matter how you slice it hes not taking less than 10.
Mathews is a phenomenal player, but lets be real Mcdavid is probably the best player in the NHL. The guys got wheels and hands, in today's game that's a deadly combination. |

Good grief. With Kucherovs deal Stevie has $66 mil in 12 players next year. That gives them 13 mil to sign 10 players. There could be some moves but only 2 dmen are under contract next year. This should be interesting |

Kind of a stupid topic imo, it'll be between the Leafs, Austin, and Austin's agent. The best player doesn't always take the most money. After all, Toews gets paid more than Crosby. Regardless, he'll get paid by the Leafs and the real discussion will be who falls off after that. |

I believe I read on someone's "Corner" that Eichel AND Dahlin are better than both McD and AM. |

Whatcha gonna do? You have one of the best lines in the league, gotta keep it together. Plus the supporting cast is pretty stellar...sign some plugs for the rest and go for it |

Not bad.
He still has me a bit worried re: playoff performance. That said, 9.5aav for a 40 goal/100 point guy who is currently 25.
I like that better than 11m for Tavares. - OzBolts
Cool, but that's not an apples to apples comparison at all (RFA vs. UFA). |

Personally, I don't disagree with the premise. So many people want to default to McDavid being the best player, but I watch them both play quite a bit and I don't think that it's a guarantee that he is.
Personally, I think Matthews in Edmonton makes them slightly better, and McDavid in Toronto makes them slightly worse. Just my opinion - AllInForFlyers

He barely got on the ice some of those games... I don't think anyone should be worried, really. Especially now that we have Tavares, teams will have to pick which one to send their best defenders out against. Hopefully the next time we see the post season he gets some space. |
