I think anytime you talk about prospects in a rebuild there is a risk. If the prospects work out, then you are well on your way to being a real competitive team. If they don't, then that's what makes for long periods of not making the playoffs. The picks only mean something if your scouts do there job of identifying the right guys.

As for the net, that, of course, is another question mark. The Rangers have picked a bunch of goalies over the years and just have to hope that they hit on one of them. The backup plan to the Russian kid? I think that was pretty evident when they drafted a goalie with the 39th overall pick with some guys that were potentially slated as first round picks still on the board.

This is why TANKING is no proper means to building a Cup Winner. Just because a Pittsburgh and Chicago took advantage in drafting very high when down for some straight seasons, that doesn't mean it would have worked similarly for other teams had they drafted their exact same star players alone. There was much more on & off the ice than just those few key top draftees that was also needed to build those two teams' Cup winners. There's no guarantee TANKING will win you the lottery for the rights to the #1 overall pick, nor that if you draft in the top 5 for 5 years straight, that it will work wonders.
That's why you're correct Pete, in that if picks fail to work to their expected scale, it could lead to many years of non postseason hockey, by delaying a rebuild plan even further. At some point, there has to be an alteration to bringing in mid to upper level experience through free agency, or the more likely option should free agents opt for a better chance in contending (like Kovalchuk), through trades then of some top future picks and young prospects who would then be in surplus, with the experienced players now back in the mix.

Not sure if anyone saw, MSG had a summer update program thing with Valliquette and Micheletti. From what he saw so far, Joe was raving about Hajek and Ronning. More so on Hajek, saying at worst he’s probably a top 4 guy. And he can move to the right side down the road
- Slimtj100

Valliquette was also raving about Lindgren's confidence level being equal to that of Hajek's, who he said will play in this league for a long time.
However, among their youngest d'men in Hajek and Lindgren (each 20), Pionk (22), DeAngelo (23), Gilmour and O'Gara (each 25), the only one he said was "A LOCK" to make the Pro roster, was Pionk. So, barring any trade, that will leave those other five, along with Claesson (25) and Kampfer (29), in a battle for the remaining spots, with Staal, Shatty, Smith, Skjei, & Pionk having the first five.

Great blog, Jan. But although Hank didn't give the Rangers sort of "a hometown discount" when he signed his 7 YEAR/$59.5M contract extension in Dec., 2013, I feel there were reasons why that was so.
1) Hank's prior contract was a 6 year/$41.25M one (AAV of $6.875M). Yes, his $8.5M was an AAV increase of $23.6%, but was still only an annual increase of $1.625M on that long term deal, which he figured rightfully so, would be his last chance of earning that high annually at any term. Furthermore, there would have been another team that would likely offered Hank the max. of 8 years he had demanded, and up to maybe $9M annually back when his prior 6 year deal would expire.
2) When Hank signed his 7 year extension in Dec., 2013 having an $8.5M cap hit, Rask and Rinne each had the highest goalie cap hits at $7M. In addition, they have still today, never won Cups yet for their respective teams, though Rask was on the Bruins Cup winner in 2010 as a backup to their Cup winning starting goalie in Tim Thomas. So among Hank, Rask, and Rinne, Hank was the better goalie at that time he was extended here.
3) But most of all, the bottom line was that Hank was the franchise, and deserved to be paid more than anyone here at that time on a new deal. That included being paid more than a certain player acquired for the 2012/13 season, who in earning $7.8M in 2013/14, would have his salary gradually rise to $8.2M through the 2017/18 season. Remember Rick Nash, who signed his $7.8M AAV/8 year/$62.4M contract with the Blue Jackets effective with the 2010/11 season, but whose salary would actually escalate from $7.8M (when Hank was extended), up to $8.2M in last season's final year.
That's in key why Hank accepted the Rangers offer, in not giving them any greater of a hometown discount than just that 1 fewer year term.

Please tell me why many think NYR can't have a rebuild with both Zib and Hayes? Plenty of $$ for them to get big FA or two up front and on D next year or after..Even with them on team. MAny youngsters going to be on ELCs to absorb their cost. Both have a alot of potential to improve even more in upcoming years. Both in prime

NYR will be biggest surprise in NHL next year

Why not?
So your Devils would benefit in making the postseason, if it came down to either them or the Rangers for either 3rd in the Metro., or for the 2nd Eastern Wild Card spot to make it?
TANKERS do not belong on this Rangers site, and are only "SAW" LOSERS if they are actually Rangers fans for real, in expecting a benefit to be handed to them for purposely being bad, which in turn is not a guarantee for anything good in the future, including #1, a lottery win for the overall #1 pick.

So what is it?
You're either a Devils troll, or a "saw" loser for a Rangers fan.

No cause I want the Rangers draft pick to be better. Which would help the rebuild now and in the future. This isn't Rocket Science.

Because apparently we have TO MANY centers now. These are the same people that b!tched when they didn’t have enough centers you can’t win. Personally I’d much prefer 342 centers as opposed to 342 LHD, but I ain’t our scouts haha

"Wanting the Rangers draft pick to be better, through means of tanking is only possible if there are at least 5 or more Hughes's in the 2019 draft, as well as a great following five draftees, or had there been 3 each of Dahlin, Svechnikov, and Zadina in this past June's draft.
Even then, there is no guarantee of any great resulting from having "a better pick", due to the fact that this is life, and some top pick selections may not work out well, or to their expected best as an NHL'er, as the team's scouts had felt they would.
That doesn't take "Rocket Science" to see, as many Rangers fans alone have experienced down through the years.

So I really want Panarin and Ryan Ellis next off season as UFAs. Two needs solved. In fact, I want what Minnesota did with Suter and Parise. Both signed in one day at the same time and introduced at the same presser. They are going to need to do something big next season to signal the rebuild is in full force. Both guys are young enough to be core guys and not be in that old man range til yr 6 of the 7 yr deals they’d get.

Karlsson ahead of Ellis obviously if it’s possible. But Panarin is must sign imo

I know that, but spelled it that way in "SAW" due to the one I replied to, who "SEES" things waaaaay differently in belief than others do here, including in TWISTING some's comments meanings, to read the way he wants them to read and be interpreted as, to claim later that they are the ones who are incorrect or stupid, while he is always Mr. Right.
Look no further than he wanting the Rangers to TANK for a CENTURY, prior to anything else.
Didn't I spell the word, "way" incorrect here then as well, but for only a particular reason in expressing it similarly?

There is talk that Boston is trying to make something big happen, to keep pace with their improved division's competition.
Word was that they were interested in Panarin as one option via a trade, with some names tossed around including DeBrusk heading to Columbus. I know that earlier, they were also considering to use Krug as trade bait to improve.

Saver, baby. Embrace the tank. Rangers signed no quality UFA's and don't look like they will be making a big trade. Sink into the mudd baby. It's where I live and love. Let's get piggly wiggly.
