That was me. Thank you for bringing that up. Buffalo retained ZERO salary and it cost them with value in return. *giggles*

They basically got Tage Thompson for 2 salary dumps and a 1st for ROR...not #3 overall though.

Soooooo they got at best Brayden Schenn value. Feels good.

- Glak18

Funny that when ROR was a Sabre, fans of other teams said he was at best a good 2C. He gets traded for a good prospect, a couple of draft picks (including a first rounder), and a couple of players who are useful to the Sabres and most likely will have their money off the Sabres books in a couple of years. They did this while not retaining any of RORs $7.5million annual salary who's contract is for another 5 years. And after the deal people complain Buffalo didn't get enough. I think that's a decent return for a 2C with a long contract at a high aav.

It wasn't a bad deal for the Sabres, unless you are comparing it to the trade proposals Garth makes up. Berglund and Sobotka are probably better than most players in Buffalo's bottom 6, so even if they aren't great, unfortunately for the Sabres, it's an upgrade.

I am so behind on hockey from being on vacation...

I was wondering why ROR wasn't in the lineup then saw he was traded.

Buffalo thoughts on trade? Obviously not as close as a haul the Toronto...I mean Buffalo fans were asking for.

- Glak18

Our GM asked for a 1st, solid prospect, and a roster player. We got a 1st, 2nd, solid prospect, and 2 roster players, so what the hell are you talking about?

I dig the Smith hiring, someone to fill that role for Hajt is a welcome chance.

Ok so what you are saying is Buffalo got a a couple 1st round picks, a young roster player with high end potential and a top 4 defenseman without retaining salary?

There would be no other way to say it...either you got tons of value by retaining salary or you got little value by not retaining salary. Sooner or later you have to make up your mind. Berglund and Sobtka are 6.5M salary dump pure and simple instead of 4.7M the Flyers took for Lehtera.

You may want to re-read ALL the threads about ROR trade proposals, Garth doesn't mean anything. These proposals were not from 1 or 2 people, they were from dozens of different people.

Great 2 roster players YOU think who are useful, the rest of the league disagrees including St. Louis who has been trying to dump for years now. You call them 2 depth players, others call them 6.5M salary dump...repeat 6.5M which balances out 7.5M for ROR.

I don't care what other said, it was well known what our GM was asking: a 1st, a good prospect, and a solid roster player. That's what he got and then some. Berglund is still a decent player and will be a fine 3C for us, a 1st, a 2nd, and Thompson is all a decent return for ROR.

Just what do you think ROR was worth? He's slow, has a bad back, can't score 5 on 5, and is a locker room cancer. RoR will be garbage in 3 years and St. Louis is going to wish the never made that trade.

That's one way to look at it for justification. Like I could say the Flyers got TWO 1st round picks and a 3C for Brayden Schenn...Schenn, B.
- Glak18

Brayden Schenn was a 5th overall pick
ROR was a 33rd overall pick

At time of the trade:
Schenn was $5.125m cap hit
ROR was $7.5m cap hit

Schenn was 25 years old
ROR was 27 years old

Schenn was coming off a 55 pt season (79 games) with around 17:48 of ice time a game (0.039 pts/game/minute) (sorry I'm not into all those advanced stats)
ROR was coming off a 61 pt season (81 games) with around 20:49 ice time per game (0.036 pts/game/minute)

So technically, Schenn is better there too.

You got 2 first round picks.

We got 2 first round picks and a 2021 2nd (I know thats forever) and a couple of NHL forwards (one could be considered a cap dump, the other will be nice in bottom 6 role for this team, but both improve our bottom 6).

Interesting take that your team got more for Schenn.....

Berglund is not a dump, he scored 17 goals last year for 3MM. Sobodka is a dump yes, but Buffalo also needs a better 4th line.

Thompson is intriguing and the kid is only 20 years old, former 1st round pick with a cannon of a shot. He'll get his chance. Kyrou and Thomas were untouchable as Thomas is one of the best prospects in the entire NHL, those asks were unresonable.

Also a first and second round pick.

I'm fine with the Value, I think ROR is a fake person and was an issue in the room.
Hes had issues with Colorado and now Buffalo. Every team he has been on has been garbage, where he was supposed to be the voice and the leader. Is that just coincidence?

Add - ROR as a 5 on 5 scorer is ranked 161st over the last two years. Behind Berglund and Sobodka. He is good on the Power play though.

Forgot to mention, the two "cap dump" players had 57 points last year (one only played 56 games) and ROR had 61 points. So we basically got the same amount of points back. The guy you got had 8 points. Nice.

St Louis traded Berglund, Sobotka, Thompson, a 1st and 2nd for ROR

Also,

St Louis traded Craig Johnson, Patrice Tardif, Roman Vopat a 1st and 5th for Gretzky

Looks like the Sabres got more for ROR than the Kings got for the Great One

For Morgan Frost and Jay O'Brien...yup I am so cool with that. Notice Schenn was traded to be the #1 center then all of sudden St. Louis goes out and gets ROR AND Bozak, but but but but Schenn had 70 points.

And, we don't want RoR back, he's a pain in the ass. We dodged a bullet dumping his contract on St. Louis.

Don't know if it was you specifically, but you said "we" so I remember saying take less back or retain salary or keep him.

EVERY time the response was "Fine, we will be happy to keep him" that was always followed by how much return ROR would get once JT signed...remember BEST center available after JT?

Gotcha Jimmy Jam. Not trolling, just gloating and smiling ear to ear from being right. I received the same thing from Leaf fans when I said Toronto would have to retain salary for Kessel. They said no way in hell does that ever happen for months. Again I just enjoy being right.
