I'm hearing DET is likely to get Kaut in the deal as well.

This is a strong point. In addition, guys like Sergachev and Point will be looking for huge raises next year and the following. I have no idea how Yzerman could do it without trading away one more large contract.
- spatso

These two would likely be traded in a package for Karlsson.

They both play for Canadian teams that won’t make the playoffs ????

The question is how much do you need to deal away to fit Erik? Its not like you have no one on the roster. That D is already stacked and expensive. Some important pieces may need to go too.
- jnyfive

It isn't overly difficult though.

Trade Cally, Johnson, and Killorn for cap relief and futures.

Extend Point and Karlsson. (Sergachev likely gone in Karlsson deal)

Fill roster with ELCs and cup chasing vets.

Buyout McDonagh with compliance buyout after the next lockout.

Everyone jumps on Sergachev as the go to guy that has to be a part of a deal with Tampa. But scouts love Cal Foote. Tampa is so deep in prospects it is hard to imagine anyone outbidding Yzerman if that is what he wants to do.

Vonn lies in Vail Colorado

Just connecting the dots

You think Sergachev is enough to get Karlsson?

Yeah.

OTT is not dealing from a position of power.

Even though OTT has given permission to speak with Karlsson you are still essentially trading for a player with 1 year on his deal.

the karlsson thing has drug on way too long. everyone has known since the trade deadline that paches wants the panthers. either unload him now and get an asset back or wait....and get nothing.

the isles had zero plan in place until they brought lou in. way too late to sign JT. the commute from long island to brooklyn was miserable for everyone and the arena issue still looms large for potential free agents.

I always thought that #65 would be a good fit in dallas. dallas also has no state income tax.

MacKinnon and Timmons for EK65. That's fair.

Ottawa does not need to be in a position of power. They have Melnyk and he is crazy and unpredictable. Entirely possible he wakes up one morning and decides to trade Karlsson to the Leafs for an old Mats Sundin jersey.

While that may be the trend the examples aren’t factually true.
Shattenkirk did not force a trade to his team of choice; the rangers. He was traded to the capitals and then went to his team if choice as a UFA. Much like Tavares just did to the Leafs (Go Leafs Go!) - but Shattenkirk did so first.
Hopefully we will see more if this; good players on the move is always a lot of fun.

They do if you are trying to value Karlsson as if the team acquiring has contract control locked in.

I think Heiskanen rates out higher with Ottawa than Sergachev. But, no indication Dallas has put his name forward. If Dallas does he goes to Texas unless Yzerman comes up with a stronger mix. Heiskanen is the best prospect being discussed as a possible.

I think that is why Ottawa allowed Karlsson to negotiate with a few teams (Tampa, Dallas and Vergas that we know about).

That is correct however knowing OTT is unable to extend him reduces the value.
