Sounds like Eklund is getting more and more desperate for hits.

I doubt he has any interest or desire to stay there now. Just keep Ryan and get max value for EK. I don't get this package nonsense. It's like trying to sell a Porsche but trying to force the buyer to buy your broken down 1970's Winnebago along with it.

No one really knows the true state of the situation with Karlsson. Locally, we hear that the Sens have offered the right amount of money but the sticking point is the structure of the deal. Karlsson wants lockout protection in the form of a Tavares type deal where most of his salary would be bonuses and front loaded. Not sure that is something Melnyk can afford.

They might be able to free up some cash if they can rid themselves of Gaborik, Ryan, Smith or Anderson. That might explain why things seem to have stalled at the moment. Dorion could be working on various deals.

I do find it funny that fans of other teams want to rush this to suit their own agenda. Gotta love the Vegas and Tampa fans who are hoping Sens give them Karlsson for peanuts while Leafs fans just want to see him leave their provincial rival in the hope of resurrecting some W's in the win column.

does he want to play for a competitive team? potentially winning the cup? thats not going to happen under current sens ownership. in addition, i would imagine the taxes in Nevada, TX or Florida are much better. He could make more money and have a better chance at a cup. why would he stay?

Agreed with DozerD10. If this is somewhat true, this could be the Sens just hitting that point where the offers are the best they will be and they aren’t entirely happy or they are trying to drive up the price a little more. Just making one last effort before they make a decision.

Chris Stevenson reports a lack of signing bonuses may be the reason defenseman Erik Karlsson rejected the Ottawa Senators’ eight-year contract offer. Citing a source not affiliated with the Senators who has knowledge of the offer, he said the club’s proposal was closer to $11-million annually but came up short in signing-bonus money.

The way I understand it is 40mil of Tavares 77mil is signing bonus paid in first 3 years...and Karlsson would like something similar.....but Senators can't afford that financially.

Ottawa needs to offer an ownership change . This one has worn out his welcome all his current players are developing exit strategies and free agents won't come there.

Karlsson witnessed Melnyk's loyalty with how Alfredsson was treated. There's no point signing for less than max dollars with Ottawa because he's going to get effed some way or another.

if the teams that are favored to land him are offering Trade Deadline level packages (or worse), then keep him until then when there could be more teams in, and the deals will be better (or at least the same) as teams go all in trying to win a cup. Worst case scenario is that he gets injured and walks for nothing, but that is almost preferable to trading him away for next to nothing anyway

This seems like a fairly clear message from the Karlsson camp that re-signing is not as remote a possibility as some believe... especially now that they've gotten a sense of the interest from other teams. There's still a matter of trying to restructure and front-load the deal with bonus money, but if Dorion has received nothing but low-ball offers that becomes a much more feasible scenario... particularly if there's genuine interest on Karlsson's part in staying. They'd also have the full year to try to trade Smith and Anderson, and could buy out Gaborik next season for a relatively minimal amount.

Given that they basically just threw an un-negotiated contract offer at Karlsson on July 1st, this is probably the best news in some time for Senators fans regarding the possibility of Karlsson signing a long-term extension.
