Quick hit this morning....

I am hearing a lot of talk regarding the NY Islanders interest in Anteri Panarin....

Text from a source:

"This is all on the Isles side as of now...what the Jackets would want/expect back is uncertain, but the Islanders are going to be VERY aggressive in this Panarin market...It's the perfect fit for them and Anteri..."

What's the Buzz?

What do you see the Jackets getting from the Isles in this deal?

more on the way...

There is no city with more passion for its own than Buffalo, NY.

I know people from Buffalo who live near me. You probably do as well. It's interesting. Have you noticed how people once from Buffalo are always from Buffalo? In this day and age where the economy forces people to change locales like the weather, people often uproot and integrate into new cities. Not Buffalonians. You can move them physically, but NEVER mentally.

This even goes for players who play for the Sabres. Players with enough money to live anywhere, find their way back to Buffalo when they retire...They often call the city "The Only Canadian City in America."

The only other American city that comes close to this kind of homing instinct is 3 hours away in Pittsburgh. People from Pittsburgh are also ALWAYS from Pittsburgh. Far more than the other big city in PA, Philadelphia.

This past week the Sabres bought out a local kid, Tim Kennedy. Kennedy is a third/fourth liner who in most cities people would have felt bad about, but...they would have moved on....they may have mentioned it on the local news, maybe.

My sources tell me the Sabres walked away over $25,000. 25k! Not the 250,000 being reported...25K.... That is unheard of.

In Buffalo, Bills camp was open this week, but all the talk on the radio was about the Sabres hanging a local kid out to dry. How the Sabres have simply lost people this off-season. Kennedy will be fine. He grew up playing with Patrick Kane. He will be fine and find another home and flourish.

But the pain is still there. You just don't do this in a town like this. You certainly don't get away with it.

I truly feel for Sabres fans. They are so passionate. They make up huge numbers for me. They come to hockeybuzz in droves. Our writer Garth knows them and has an incredible connection with them.

Yet Sabres fans have seen their mighty post-lockout team dismantled before their eyes...one by one. I used to call them the Beatles. Briere, Drury, Campbell, and Miller. Only Miller remains from a team that were it not for losing every defenseman on their roster in the playoffs would have beaten the Hurricanes in game 7 and, in my opinion, the Oilers in the Final. But it didn't happen. Close, so close. Not entirely new for the sports fans in this town.

The Sabres built a post-lockout team on a wicked transition game. Campbell was Joe Montana. Briere was Jerry Rice. Lydman and Tallinder were also solid new NHL guys who could find the burners and counter attack anyone...they are gone too..

The only way I see the Sabres justifying letting Kennedy go over so little is if the money is there to sign another kid. An top 6 forward from Athol Springs, a 13 minute ride from Buffalo on the 5.

Lee Stempniak.

It is only due to the incredible cap crunch that Stempniak that the 28 goal scorer is available right now. He shouldn't be. I honestly can't remember a time when a 28 goal scorer was available in August 6th. The amazing thing about Stempniak is 14 of those 28 goals came in the final 18 games after he was moved to Phoenix and given top line status. And remember Stempniak scored 27 goals in '06 with the Blues. He is for real.

My fear is the Sabres see him as a star, but not a superstar...but even then...3 per isn't the 5 per they once tried to keep their stars around with...

Will it happen? I have no idea. I have given up trying to understand this franchise. Darcy and Lindy have my respect yet their latest moves have confused me.

I am hearing the Sabres, Coyotes, Kings, and Oilers have interest...but the Sabres are the team to make this happen.

Lee Stempniak is from there. and as I said, Buffalo guys stay Buffalo guys forever. I would love to see how he would perform for his hometown team. The fact the Sabres could get 30 goals right now for $3 million per is a no-brainer.

I WOULD SAY EBERLE, HO-SANG, AND A 2ND IN 2019. EBERLE COULD STICK AROUND BUT THERE IS A STRONG POSSIBILITY HE WON'T NOW THAT TAVARES LEFT. AND WITH 1 YEAR LEFT ON HIS CONTRACT, YOU COULD GET A GREAT PLAYER IN PANARIN AS OPPOSED TO NOTHING COME FREE AGENCY

Does Panarin play center of defense — because that is what the Islanders need.

If you are going to make a speculative guess involving the Islanders, would it be too much to have the player the Islanders are interested in be a center or a defender?

P.S.
Panarin is a wonderful player — just doesn't address the Islanders needs.

As much as I'd love to see what Barzal and Panarin could do together on the ice, I'm thinking there's no way NYI lands him.

They are NOT trading Barzal. They are NOT trading Wahlstrom or Dobson. They are NOT trading Bellows. They could dangle Ho-Sang in front of the Jackets, but do they want to make the same mistake they made when they dealt Neiderreiter? He's one of the absolute better 2 way forwards in the league. Ho-Sang is a different type of player, but you see where I'm going with this..

The future is bright for the Isles. They should tank two more years and rise from the ashes like the Leafs did. (Unfortunately though, they won't land John Tavares through free agency )

I don't disagree with a whole lot here, but I wouldn't be so confident that they won't trade Bellows. In fact, I see Bellows as the prospect most likely to be traded in a bigger deal. Wahlstrom makes Bellows expendable, in the right trade.

Panarin probably has no interest in playing for NYI or signing long term with them....He's a perfect fit.

But judging by the CBJ playoffs the team lacks a finisher with Cup experience and only Boychuk fits that bill. Very doubtful they would take his contract and age etc.

I dont see it. Isles will be better than ppl expect but not much better but the would be fools to trade away their promising young players at this point. I mean if they could land a sign and trade for him by all means but i dont see it.

Isles should stay pat and either take salary for picks or shed the dead weight *cough* Ladd *cough* and look to sign someone next FA. If i were Isles, id at least try an offersheet for Nylander. Worst that will happen is he doesnt sign or Toronto matches.

Its an E (4) with no idea what is going back nor what CB would want. Sounds like a real solid rumor here.

I took a look at the stats from Columbus last year and was shocked at how little they produced up front besides Panarin. No one had more than 24 goals or 48 points who played center/wing.

If this plays out for the Isles it's got to be more of a hockey trade and less of a futures trade unless CBJ wants to do a partial rebuild, which I don't see.

I think you have to think of something like replenishing the offense for Columbus and ignoring the defense. Maybe a goalie for depth from our system too since it looks like CBJ is kind of thin in the prospect pool.

According to the stats there were only 39 Power Play Goals from the current roster last season? Is that right?

If so, I would think Lee would be more attractive than Eberle, he certainly would fit the type of player Torts likes. You could add Skarek for the prospect pool at goalie and then maybe Bailey for your first line wing (Lee/Dubois/Bailey) and maybe a sweetener like one of the Bridgeport defensemen not named Toews.

Of course, both Lee and Panarin would need to agree to extensions before this would be possible.

So maybe something like Panarin and a 2nd for Lee, Bailey, Quenneville and Skarek? Assuming signed contracts for Lee and Panarin.

Wow, what an exciting time to be able to spell 'sweeps'.

We've had;

The Tavares sweeps,
The Karlsson sweeps (which is still sweeping),
The Jack Johnson sweeps (now that was exciting),
The Barry Trotz sweeps,

And now the Panarin sweeps (with 1 team apparently).

This is a whole lotta broom! Right there punters, right there (unless you're left handed).

I'm wondering what pyjamas 'Arteri' wears..........that's the key to unlocking the broom closet.

Does Hoffman being brushed by the Sens count?

He is obviusly playing in Chicago 2019-2020. Trading for him is probably a big mistake IF you don’t get him to sign a contract when the trade happens.
