Rumors say they're hearing it from isles side which means it's probably false. If we've learned anything from how the isles and Lamirello works. No one knows it's happening till after it happens. - brodydog29
It's a rumour that makes sense though. In terms of need, the desired market for Panarin, and a team (Isles) that has the assets to pull the trade off. |

Lack of structure. Too many odd man rushes. Too many guys left wide open because 2, sometimes 3 defenders would engage the puck, leaving their man open in front. - brodydog29
So aka. Bad coaching. |

I liked Weight but, I'd have to say yes. Seemed like the game plan was to outscore people and it got way out of hand...
Even in the beginning when the team was doing well, they were winning games 5-4, 6-4... knew if they didn't buckle down on the back end it was going to end badly. Once Boychuk and deHaan went down and they made zero adjustments, it got away from Weight and you could obviously see he was in over his head at that point with post game interviews. Comedy for fans now but, at the time, I remember yelling at my TV and shaking my head way too often. |

And there's no way you're going to see that often with Trotz and Lambert running the show. |

Was the defense in terms of players bad? Or was it the refusal to block shots scheme that was the factor? - bgainesDM
iMHO, the isles had no discipline, no defensive zone responsibility. The players were better than their collective defensive statistics showed. |

Don't under estimate the value of Korn to the Isles. He'll get the most out of the back up goalies the Isles have. He did it with Hutton when Rinne went down for the season a couple years back. Nashville didn't score alot back then and Hutton I think 30 games many of them 1 goal contests.
I would expect the first half of the season to be hit and miss with mostly miss. But and it's a big but, if the Isles can keep it close in the standings they could sneak in with a nice run to end the season. That's the Trots factor! |

It very funny how often you hear, Tavares had noone around him or now suddenly DeHaan is big loss on Defense.
The Reality is we have had plenty of guys scoring 30+ goals, DeHaan never became top 2 dman we drafted him to be nor can he every stay healthy for full season.
Great Coaching goes a long way look at Blackhawks. I expect islanders to surprise relative to expectations. If being the wildcard team is the goal, isnt that what best isles with tavares and dehaan only got to before. Also Barry Trotz made the best generational goal scoring forward in last 15 years in Ovechkin a better hockey player. BD is right. Everyone will be more responsible. Expect a team of all Pluses this year despite perhaps lower total scoring.
Isles will be fine and we have plenty of talent.
Barzal will trump Tavares acheivements. Expect Beauvillier to huge surprise player this year. 30+ goals. Also, in post Tavares era dont be shocked when Bailey and Nelson suddenly do more. While baileys PP stats might take a hit, expect him to be more important players 5 on 5. Best overall hockey player on Islanders last year did not play at all with John Tavares. His name was Jordan Eberle, who we now have money to resign for next 6-7 years.
I do think Bellows may crack this line up this year. We also have Josh Ho Sang. Their is skill here and this team will improve each year. |

to many 1-way contracts on team, wont see him unless of injury or after trades are made to clear up roster space, AHL bound .... |

The loss of JT currently stings the offense but unless bottom 6 players help/surprise with production is only was possible isles sneak in... |

I also don't expect every UFA signing to make the team. They CAN be waived. And if they're claimed, oh well. Lou did that plenty of times as GM of Jersey. |

good point Bgaines. Camp is going to be very competitive. Aside from Eberle, Beau and Barzal together and probably Cizikas, Clutter, Martin. i couldnt tell you what the other lines going be.
who Centers Lee and Bailey? or does Trotz make Bailey the Center he was suppose to be. We all know Nelson going to have his best year ever this year. Nelson is motivated by Money, not winning. i see 25-30 goals from him this year. |

I guess the plan is Jan Kovar, but who knows.
Edit : it’s also going to be interesting to see what a real coach and GM do with this team with respect to the players they have. Too many guys were drafted as successful centers and were thrown on wing and then chastised when they floundered at wing. Perhaps Bailey should go back to center....because i don’t see him having last years numbers without JT |

oddly i was looking at all the players we have going into camp. Either someone getting traded or you going to have some healthy scratches.
Assume Komarov, Kuhnhackl, Kovar, and Fillipula make the team. Where does JHS fit in?
Opening night roster?
Beau Barzal Eberle
Lee Fillipula/Kovar Bailey
Ladd/Kuhnhackl- Nelson Komarov/JHS
Martin Cizikas Clutterbuck.
Call me crazy - but thats most competition i have seen in long time. Good job Lou.
I dont think Bailey will have last years numbers with JT but i wont be surprised if his stats wont be that far off. Remember Bailey started the year not with tavares last year and was producing well. Tavares requested him back on his line.
We all know Bailey has alot of talent, its his desire/hunger we always questioned.
Good news, with Trotz - someone not given it his all wont play. |

There’s no doubt there will be healthy scratches but you need extras in case of injury. Finally having competition for roster spots makes for a better roster.
As for Bailey he’s been d1cked around by this team for his entire tenure. They never knew what to do with him. They drafted a playmaking center, through him on wing, then had him as a bottom 6 checking winger for 4 years, only to be a first line wing???? EVERY PLAYER needs to know his own role to be a cog on the wheel. I do think Bailey lacks heart, but he does have ability and he has value. It remains to be seen what that will be, but I’m sure under this regime we will find out.
