I get players (and especially their agents) can be greedy, but why is it up to Max to insure that the Canadians get back the best return, at possibly the expense of his future earnings? Obviously the LA deal, if it existed, was based on the team being led to believe that they would be able to resign Max at a certain price tag, and therefore the return was higher, no?

Exactly, why should Max agree to lower $$$ on a long term deal just to help the habs if he's no longer with them!?
I'm not a Max (or habs) fan but he's been paid lower than his production the past few years and if he thinks he can get 1 last great paying contract for his career, hard to blame him...

His only concern is getting paid? Despite the fact he is a very passionate captain....

There is no logic to it....

Instead of trading away your good players, Habs need to trade away the current GM, and get someone who knows what they are doing....

Patches has all the right in the world to play this out however the hell he wants, He's been a soldier to this point for the Habs no matter how he's been treated in return. Maybe he has his heart set on signing in a different location and said he would be Ok in LA if they paid him enough, With his acomplishments, career to date and earned right to FA status he can do whatever he likes, Its up to the team to treat him well enough to care about what they get in return but he has all the cards. No problem with his actions whatsoever.

Toffoli AND Vilardi is simply too asinine to be true. With Weber's injury eliminating any minuscule chance they had it being competitive, trade him as a rental and resign him in the offseason if he's really that serious about retiring as a Canadien.
