This trade is also another example of why I don't buy the "offer sheets will ruin your relationships with other GMs" story.

Dorion got absolutely hosed by Wilson, AND THEN WENT BACK TO HIM THREE MONTHS LATER TO MAKE THE MOST IMPORTANT TRADE OF HIS CAREER.

interesting take

- Nucker101

Sometimes it's about building relationships. Sens are playing the long game. Really banking on their scouts though.

I'm more disturbed about the pick they gave Colorado.

The Hoffman scenario obviously as well.

Yes Wilson is hot right now. I wonder how long their window is open.

Meh...dorion isn’t like any other GMs and the primary reason no one makes offer sheets anymore is because of the ridiculous draft pick compensation

Not really sure the long game they are playing here. As we can see by the conditions on the trade, Karlsson wasn't going to end up in the East; so it's not clear to me if they are trying to win games to avoid giving Colorado a really high pick by keeping him away from their conference rivals, or if they are too stupid to entertain trade offers from all teams for the best deal to help their rebuild.

I just can't believe this was the best deal they could have made

Exactly

The whole Hoffman deal combined with the conditions on the Karlsson deal show that the Sens have no interest in trading inside of their own division/conference, even if it means taking less value.

That’s not “playing the long game” at all

Are they worried about potential playoff competition or do they want to rebuild? Seems like they’re worried about both which makes little sense

Bruins and Sharks would be my pick

Sharks can put them on 2 different pairs and have an elite dman out there for 50 minutes inn a 60 minute game

and Vlasic and Braun are the exact type of guys who can just play the safe steady game for 20+ mins a night and let those 2 do their thing.

- Nucker101

Good points.

Sharks maybe not sure I see the Bruins though. You think Boston could get past a healthy Tampa?

It means he only plays in Ottawa once a year. Damage control.

I don't know what they can possibly do to help them win games at this point unless they give up some of these assets for roster players.

I love Boston's top line, Bergeron's line can shut down an opposing team's top line and still produce offense, that's humongous

Plus I just like the blend of youth/experience and size/skill/speed they have. Good C depth, a nice top 9 group of forwards in general. Defense is questionable with Chara really getting up there, but McAvoy and Krug are solid. Cassidy is a great coach too.

Maybe damage control from a PR standpoint, but nothing is stopping Karlsson from signing in the East after his contract expires in 10 months. In the meantime they took a subpar deal to send him West to only play him twice, and will play competitive games against BUF, NYR, NYI, MTL, and DET in a fight for a higher draft position to help a rebuild.

To me, their plan is less clear than Vancouver's has been, which has been foggy at best

Dorion has traded...

Turris
Dahlen
Hoffman
EK

For what? Lost his 1st this year for Duchene & got picks in other deals & who knows about how the actual players he got will do. Rebuilding & tanking isn’t his strong suit.

Either he is fired yestrday or he is an autistic sevant in the eyes of Melnyk.

the hilarious part is they threw in a prospect in the Karlsson deal and still have Ryan on the books.

Watch them try to attach Ryan to a Duchene or Stone deal at the TDL and get back another terrible return.

How do we know why they traded him to the West? I mean for sure? Anyone who thinks Dorion is working independently without Melnyk’s input is fooling themselves. He probably wanted as little salary back as possible, just a guess though.

Melnyk is controlling Dorion as much as Aquilini is controlling Benning. A lot!

Melnyk is just tearing down that franchise brick by brick. They’ll come out of it one day but it’s gonna take five years of drafting. Something they do well, thankfully for Sens fans.
