One other piece that Ottawa got that most of the prognosticators missed is the cap space that they won't be paying to Karlsson. That can be used for a UFA, signing some of their other significant players or taking on a bad contract from a contender for draft picks or prospects. The trade doesn't look great for Ottawa, but gives them breathing room to retool or rebuild. They do have some decent prospects in their pipeline, so all is not lost.

Was in Vegas in August and came out our room at the Wynn and Lou Lams and his wife were going in the room across the hall. I said “ hey Lou! Tavares sucks anyways”

You're kidding right? You must have become a Kings fan when they won their first Cup a few years ago. I have been one since the purple and gold days pre-Gretzky and have loved a crap team for decades. Even the era between Gretzky and Palffy when Kristich was their best player. So, I can totally imagine what Sens fans are going through since I have gone through it as a Kings fan for many years.

As a side note, seriously, no other team could come up with a better deal for EK? That is sad.

I dont feel the deal is as bad as people make it out to be. They get 3 good picks, 2 promising prospects and Teirny who is a good young player. People forget he had 40 points last year on the 3rd line for SJS and he is only 24. He has 3 and a half seasons under his belt. All for a player that was going to walk at the end of the season.

I don't know how much if this is on Dorion, other than being put in a poop position by Melnyk that basically guaranteed a poor trade.

I would bet that this is a precursor to another trade and it's an excellent first step. Tierney is a good 2-way #3 Center who can fill in at #2 for short periods of time. He, Norris, and Balcers have very good hockey sense; similar to Logan Couture. Suomella will probably slot in in Tierney's place while Letunov, Gambrell, and Goodrow battle for #4 Center. DeMelo is expendable as the #6 since Ryan and Heed are available.
The puzzle will be interesting next year if they are able to extend EK65 with cap space and impending RFA's to contend with. Figure this is Jumbo's last year, so that saves $5mm. Pavs has slowed down the past 2 seasons and has had trouble keeping up but he still has value so perhaps he takes a pay cut from $6mm to stay with the contender. Don't be surprised if Burns gets shipped somewhere this season or next.
