But will Zetterberg's permanent LTIR (coincidently after his pay takes a dramatic dive) get the same negative attention from bloggers and fans from other teams as the Hawks and Hossa got all last winter?
I'm guessing NOT.

- 67hawks

I know there were fans that were crying foul about Hossa, but I didn't see much in the media, or from other teams. I'm guessing it will be similar. I personally don't care, since I think the league (frank)ed up when they made legal contracts basically illegal.

There is one contract that I hope comes back to hurt his former team...I hope Weber retires with about 3 years left on his contract. That would crush Nashville!

I think we may have something in that #71. Nice size and strong play from one of the youngest players on the ice today. Could be a later round steal for us.
- 67hawks

What position is he playing? Elite prospects has him listed as a center, but as young as he is, I didn't know where Q would put him.

Kurashev is a LW and center but will most likely be effective as a winger. The knock on him is his consistency. When he doesn't apply himself, he's a ghost out there. But when he's on, he's a skilled two way forward.

Agree, he could be a steal and a surprise this camp. Played well at Traverse City, too.

As we head into the scrimmage today, some thoughts on those lines.

LN1 - As mentioned above, I heard when the Hawks signed Kunitz, there was a possibility that Coach Q tried him with Toews.

Also, I heard at times last year that the Hawks liked having a "bigger" player on a line with Debrincat for protection and as a deterrent. Tbis is why John Hayden saw some time on his line at the end of last year.

Kunitz will never pretend to be a heavyweight but has a long history of sticking up for teammates and taking no sh*t on the ice from ppl.

I'm not sure this line sticks, and Kunitz 4 years ago who have been a PERFECT fit with Toews... but not sure if he can keep it up for 82 games.

LN2 - as predicted Saad-Schmaltz-Kane head into camp as a line. Kane seems thrilled about it, but as we know it can change within minutes with Q.

Remember when Hartman-Schmaltz-Kabe were going to be a line all year?

LN3 - while Ejdsell and Anisimov on a line is not ideal, I love the idea of Sikura setting up the rangy Swede for one-timers on that line while AA drives the net.

It looks like Ejdsell is getting a shot now but will have to produce in preseason to make this team.

LN4 - Hayden and Martinsen played well between Tyler Sikura in Rockford... so there is some chemistry there.

D - with the Murphy news, all signs would point to Jokiharju to make this team.

What I would keep an eye on is lefties like Davidson, Hillman and Dahlstrom who slide over to their off-side in preseason games. That might be an indication of who they are favouring as camp goes along.

Not saying I expect much out of him or for him to make the Hawks NHL roster, but Schroeder had a pretty decent scrimmage.

Edit: Just to add, Highmore would played with him was no slouch either. His speed created that first goal for red.

Sounds about right unless his development grows exponentially under the Hawks staff and make the team next year.

Doubt he makes it this year. He may impress, though, and give the team something to be excited about with him as a middle rounder.

Q singles out Henri Jokiharju as a guy who impressed him today.

"Defensively, he was pretty adequate." He meant that as a compliment, by the way. #PrettyAdequate

One would think this counts as a form of relentlessness: persistent drive to get the puck no matter where it's at. I also love the fact that he knows what to do with it once retrieved.

I surmise that Carlson is the best, more advanced ready prospect behind Jokiharju. But with him, the Kurasov (sic) Russian player,, and whomever else you like, we need to see them in games.

Small window in a training camp so what may be a big clue as to how a prospect fares,, is their advancement, development, poise. This is cumulative & seen from first training camp game to last.

There are some forwards with grit and skill combination to really like bit none figure to make the team. Fortin might fit that mild and would be the leader among those in this category.

Please anyone who attends an exhibition game, feel free to pass along your observations. No one is scoring your opinion; merely interested in whatever nuggets you come up with which you happened to notice.

Everyone is speaking highly of Jokiharju, it’s only day one of camp but it’s a good start.

Sounds like Sikura had a good day too.

I’m a little concerned about Kampf, I think he could be a solid contributor on the 4th line. Will Q overlook Kampf for Kruger? I think there’s easily room for both on the team. I have faith that Kruger will bounce back, but there’s a chance he doesn’t. If that happens the team will need Kampf.

Yeah, Sikura with 2 goals and Edjsell assisting on both.

With Anisimov potentially being 3C and Kruger as 4C (and Kahun being a possible 3C option as well), I believe Kampf will make the team, most likely as bottom 6 RW and prime penalty killer. His experience at center will make him valuable for Q to have lineup flexibility and another faceoff option even if he is penciled in at wing.

Sorry, but who are you referring to when you say Carlson? Lucas Carlsson, I assume. I would think Hillman and maybe even Dahlstrom are ahead of Carlsson on the depth chart. IMHO, Carlsson needs a year in Rockford with a possible cup of coffee later this season.

As for grit/skill combination, Fortin may have that to a certain degree but Knott and Noel have been stating their case recently as well. Kurashev, too.

It shouldn't be Kampf vs Kruger - it should be Kampf vs Martinsen. And in that case, Kampf should make the team over Martinsen for that 4th line and it's not even close. And I say that as someone who likes Martinsen as a body checking option.

The issue is that Hayden is already on that line with Kruger and having both of them means that line cannot be an optimal checking/shutdown line because neither Hayden nor Martinsen can transition well and an actually good checking/shutdown line has to be able to get the puck out of the zone with possession. Hayden is a younger option who is also a better passer and shooter than Martinsen, so he should get the spot. The 3rd spot needs to go to someone who can carry a damn puck while skating so Kruger isn't the only option and can be good defensively - that's likely Kampf.

Successful teams do not have grinder 4th lines anymore - they just don't. I might throw something at my TV if Q goes back to something that just doesn't (frank)ing work anymore in the NHL like that.

Agree with you and it matches what I've read about Kampf likely slotting in as a wing. If I put my Q hat on, I think he likes the idea of feeding the 4th line those Dzone starts and having another option to take the draw if Kruger gets tossed out.
