Was hoping for the Diagonal Pittsburgh and wouldve been great with a yellow version of it like Jboyd also brought up. But I'm ok with these.

From TIOPS:

-While concussions are hard to gauge it's believed that the way Murray has responded he should be back fairly soon.

-DeSmith getting the nod and I'm not sure if they're mistaken or not, but I guess Jarry is back from his injury and my see some games as well, but hasn't been recalled yet.

-In a nutshell, Maatta's days could be numbered if Riikola fits. Despite his fallen stock, teams are still interested and some coaches believe in the right system he'd be great (which I agree with).

How great would a Toronto vs Pittsburgh matchup look with the Penguins new thirds and Toronto in blue? There doesn’t always have to be a need for a team wearing a white jersey. Washington reds vs Pittsburgh yellow. Philadelphia orange vs Pittsburgh yellow.

Love your out of the box thinking, unfortunately that doesn't fly with the NHL. It's always Darks at home, whites away. I would like a reverse sometimes as I don't mind seeing home white from time to time like in the 70's to 90's. Sometimes it's nice to see other teams colours in the visiting rink. Third jerseys should be visible in visiting rinks as well. Other sports do this like basketball & Football. There's no one specific colour for home games, sometimes they wear dark or white at home. Baseball keeps there whites at home games but regularly wear third jersey at home or on the road.
Like to see the NHL go this route. If you want to make your team more marketable, then wear different colours in different rinks.

Kinda bored today. How about some Maatta trade scenarios? I'm a big Maatta fan, but if Riikola even plays half as good as he did in the preseason I think we've seen the last of Maatta.

IF this does happen, what kind of trade scenario do the Pens look for?

A straight salary dump for picks/prospects?

An upgrade at forward in the bottom six?

A mix of a bottom-six and picks/prospects?

Honestly Maata shouldn't (and i dont think will be) dumped for a subpar return, i think he can still be a very solid 3-4 in the right system and with a partner that compliments him, I only think the pens trade him if its for a d prospect and a pick of some sort, or else why bother? He's still fairly young, could see someone like Buffalo, Chicago or Anaheim taking calls on him.

Maatta for Duchene or even Stone if salary can be retained.

A salary dump wouldn't have to be a subpar return. The right mix of picks/prospects could be very good for the Pens depending on the team they'd deal with.

Can't see that happening. It wouldn't make financial sense for the Pens.

The depressing part is knowing the likelihood of a terrible return from a potential Maatta deal. GMJR is either lights out or strikes out.

Yeah TIOPS is absolute poop, but signs seem to be pointing the wrong way for Maatta. This was one of my big concerns when we signed Johnson and now here we are. We simply don't need anymore forwards and we're gonna end up trading Maatta for a middle six winger and a draft pick.

That's necessarily a bad return.

I'd look to DET. Maybe Maatta for a 2nd + Nyquist.

TOR to bring back Kapanen and pick?

DAL for Devin Shore + 1st?

I'm just throwing poop out there, but the return could be good.

The problem is that those picks aren't gonna help us during the rest of Crosby and Malkin's Cup window, so as far as utility goes, you're swapping out Maatta for Nyquist or Kapanen, which aren't good trades seeing as we don't have a pressing need for forwards and Maatta is one of our top 3 best defensemen.

This is why I think sending him to a team for a high pick and prospects would be best. Yeah, that doesn't help Crosby, but if they get an NHL-ready prospect it can.

Plus, if Riikola does work out then at least the Pens are no worse off than they were before.

I like the new 3rd jerseys. Was kind of hoping for something a little different. Still good though. I thought there were rumors about doing something like the 3rd jerseys from the 90's. That would have been nice without the corporate pigeon.

I was never a fan of the 90's Pens' jerseys.

The thing that has worried me about Maatta is he doesn't appear to be able to do anything to help his speed. If he ever loses just a half a step, he might not be able to stay in the NHL. The division is getting younger and faster too. The NHL as a whole is going this direction.

OM is great when he plays within abilities. He gets in trouble when he tries to do too much because his wheels can't bail him out. I really question Sullivan starting the season with JJ and OM. Two guys that get into trouble when they try to do too much.

Maatta is absolutely a solid NHL defenseman, but like some players, they need the right system to flourish. TIOPS mentioned people feel he needs a Guy Boucher type system and that's how I feel. I thought he would have been a great fit in Ottawa.

Teams that have a more structure defensive system would be great for him.

Just because Määttä has to sit next game doesn't mean he will get traded... keep in mind that top4 defenders have a pretty high price-tag; but to me its a good idea to spark competition and have a look at what we have in Riikola, and maybe we rotate then, or bump JJ to 3rd defense-pair (where he belongs, highest...).
