Whichever good d-men are playing well and other teams are excited about, but willing to give up in trade because it's Dubas calling.

Ken Hitchcock on the Toronto Maple Leafs:

"They get credit for how fast they play offensively, but their strength is how fast they play defensively… They are way more accomplished on the 200-foot game than they get credit for..."

"Mike is a big proponent of… the term both of us use is, “Push the pace to create space.” That is what he does. He’s very good at that. His teams are very good at that. He really creates room underneath."

"The way Toronto plays is that they outnumber you. As soon as there is contact, their support is in quick. Toronto’s major attribute is that they play so fast defensively. They get credit for how fast they play offensively, but their strength is how fast they play defensively.

As a defender now, what has really changed now is that you used to have to go in, stop the puck up, win your one-on-one, and take the puck. Now all you have to do is get it stopped and bring more numbers than the opposition has. That is what Toronto does really well."

Maybe try Gardiner as 4th line LW, at least that takes away the defensive liability part a bit.
There's just no place for him on this team though - rielly and dermott are better at what he does best (add offense) and way better on the defensive end.

Which d are pending ufas and might become available at deadline?

WRONG! (In my best Uggy voice)

I think Dermott is way more composed and less likely to hand the puck to the other team!

The Leafs need to do two trades. The first one needs to be a sales pitch for a defenseman, preferably a right handed one, to play with Rielly. The Leafs need to pitch Nylander as an up and coming centre, to attract attention from teams that need a centre. Because the Leafs are top heavy at centre, they can advertise that Nylander is a dynamic player that they had pegged for centre, before Tavares signed in the off season. Use this argument to pry away a defenseman from a team like Anaheim or Carolina. Once that deal is achieved, you move on two deal number two.

After you have acquired a skilled right shooting defenseman, you put Gardiner on the market. You point to his offensive stats and skating. Maybe have an agreement on the table for a new contract with Gardiner. On doing a proper contract, you make it easier for another team to make such a deal. With the asset, you go out and grab another top 6 winger, with a bit more size. The winger doesn't have to be a 30 goal scorer, but 20 goals would do, with being responsible defensively. If the Leafs could work these kind of trades out, they could get control of their cap and round out their roster.

1st Trade Nylander for a RH D, then trade Gardiner for Nylander.

Unfortunately, it ripped along the seams because it was a bit too small for her. I'm sure that whoever buys it will barely notice the repair.
