Keep in mind there was no way Ottawa was going to trade Karlsson to a team in the east, especially after the Hoffman re-trade. That was in the trade agreement.

I am not saying that's not the case, but I also don't understand that thinking. Ottawa is going to suck for the next 2-3 years at a minimum. Thus, Karlsson isn't going to hurt you in meaningful games in the short term, because you aren't going to be playing any meaningful games. And then by the time you get better, he might be past his peak.

If they could have gotten more from an Eastern team, but chose the Sharks offer because they didn't want him playing in the East, that is idiotic, IMO.
