What a frustrating game. Kampf could have iced it by taking a shot at the empty net but instead he tries to get a cleaner shot and gets caught from behind. At least the Hawks get a PP to finish out the period where they basically have to play keep-away for less than 2 minutes and they end up turning over the puck and getting into a scramble and the Wild tie it. Unbelievably stupid hockey. Then in OT they made about 4 unforced errors which ended up giving up possession and finally the Wild score to win.

The Wild outplayed the Hawks for most of that game and deserved the 2 points and I'm happy the Hawks got a point out of it - but they can't play stupid on top of losing most of the board battles all game long - that's the frustrating part. If they played smart hockey in the last 2 minutes they win in regulation. Oh well.

poopty loss...

late goals in the 2nd and 3rd with complacent hawks blows away a great game by ward...

speaking of blows...back to blowville and I suspect they will be pretty pssed about that loss last week

On the bright side, the Hawks didn’t allow the GWG in the final 30 seconds of overtime.

Team loss. Still undefeated in regulation. Squeaked out 1 point, but if they played consistent could have had 2 and Minny none. Q helped with poor match-ups. Would have liked to have seen Fortin. Good debut

AND Kahun. He had a shift for about 10 seconds in OT then Q went with the old reliables Saad and Anisimov....Brutal.
Kids not allowed in OT.....except Joki because it's pretty apparent that he's our best dman.

He had a slip-up defending the back of the net. Q and his vets though. Saad can get redemption another day, not in ot

Good game by Ward for the most part ,guess Q new that .849 SV% had no where to go but up . PP with a goal lead and a 1.15 left in the game should still be a defense 1st line on the ice .But no not tonight .. Well got a point ..GO HAWKS !!!!!!!!

No comment on Q's terrible night Duff ??
Your his biggest detractor but I'm right there with you. I'm livid on he he handled this game. Cost us a point for sure and I don't want to hear that he's got this team cooking again. Toews is the main reason for the good start, not Quenneville.

Kampf (frank)ing blew it.. kid had an empty net goal and he just chokes..
- MichaeLionheart

I think a whole bunch of people "blew it". The number one culprit should be the coach by putting a rag team on the ice against The top line of Minnesota. Duncan Keith also should get a knock for pinching and allowing Zucker and his partner have a clear breakaway. It was obvious that Kane had nothing left in the tank after his first shift in O/T .. But "Coach " kept bringing him back in. The crown jewel of bad decisions started in O/T with the 40 seconds of lackluster power play with Keith at the point. Bottom line... Not enough quality player to go around for the Hawks...

It’s game 4 of 82, plus there’s is a lot of youth and new faces on the team. It will take some time to work out the kinks.

There have been some good things and some not so good things during the first 4 games. At least the Hawks are still getting points as they work through things.

Overall there’s still lots to be happy about and it starts with DeBrincat, Jokiharju, Kahun and a rejuvenated Toews.

Edit: Let’s not overlook that 3 of the 4 games so far were on the road.

Add Kane mostly (not happy with tonite’s late TO that led to the tying goal, or the OT TO against TO that led to the GWG, but he has had very good production), and Schmaltz (certainly tonite - lots of jump, lots of tenacity on the puck).

My only problem with what you said is your second set of points. Everything that is good with the team is the top line and Joki consistently, minus a bad play, I like his game overall. Everything bad with the team is ... well its hard to point the finger because it is all over the place. The problem is Ward, then it's not, then it is, and tonight it wasn't. Then it's the d, Keith is bad, then he's good with Joki, then he makes poor decisions the next game. Rutta sucks, then has a good game tonight. Gus the same. Bottom 6, good defensively needs to offer scoring, but so slow. Long story short, the bad is always the same problems but not the same players. Turnovers, bad passes or pinching, cant score, cant win timely faceoffs are plaguing this team, but nearly every player for long stretches on every other night. Its early, but the bad isnt getting better or consistent. Some come to play then a lot take shifts off. I see Kane disinterested every game. That's not the flu, that's lazy. I'm glad we got points, but we should have taken everything in a runaway but that 2nd period was puke-worthy. It's good to know that guys who put in the work don't get Q rewards, and the ones who don't go all-in do. OT management, please.

Working tonight so I won't get to watch the game until 6 but we had 8 hits the whole game? Hayden had 0 hits Kunitz 0 hits Manning 0 hits. Not that hard playing the hawks when you know they won't play the body or take a run at somebody.

Kane and Schmaltz have been good, I certainly have no complaints about their overall game. They haven’t been perfect and not as good as the Toews line, but they’ve been good.

I still think the Hawks are figuring out the bottom 6. Anisimov and Kruger are set, I like Kampf with Kruger on the 4th line. Hayden has been ok and Johnson has struggled. Kunitz is best served has the extra forward and it’s too early to tell about Fortin. Martinsen should be in Rockford. I wonder if Nilsson will replace Johnson soon.

Games like tonight hurt, no doubt about it. But I think it will take 20-25 games for us to see what type of team this group truly is.

The thing that is eating at me the most is we started out an underdog, come from behind winning team. That's fine, because there was effort and pushback in the waning period. Not a 60 min effort, but mostly when it mattered. Last two games we became the go ahead lead squanderers. Great start then great collapse. Not a 60 min effort either, but definitely lacking when it really matters. Its early in the season, just a small sample .... all I can say is come back Crow.

Just a little bit of hindsight to pour some salt in the wound after this stinker tonight.

If Stan hadn't decided to to trade Panarin for Saad, the lineup could be:

DeBrincat-Toews-Kahun
Panarin-Anisimov-Kane
Sikura-Schmaltz-Fortin
Kampf-Kruger-Hayden

Wouldn't that be nice.

Can we please put Rutta and Gus on waivers - they are not NHL defensemen.
- FourOrr

Who actually needs to be fired is Ulf. He has blinders on when it comes to European D-Men. Rutta is an absolute disaster. He never accomplishes anything. I am not exaggerating. He is ALWAYS out of position. He NEVER touches an opposing player. He ALWAYS seems to be physically on the ice. He NEVER wins the puck. He should NEVER dress for the Hawks again - at this point for me it is anyone but Rutta.

Gus at least tries to accomplish something. Not defending him outright but he is Bobby Orr in comparison to Rutta.

Agreed - why did Kampf not just quickly shoot the puck at the empty net while open? This carrying the puck until you are caught is a terrible Hawks’ habit. However, Hawks do get a PP from this chaos but then can’t figure out to play freakin’ KEEP-AWAY! Unbelievable! Dumb beyond comprehension! Q is ridiculous! Call a TIME-OUT if your players are so dumb that they can’t figure out to play KEEP-AWAY on their own, for a few SECONDS, to WIN THE GAME! A professional team that is well-coached does not lose games this way. This is for Kane on down.

Last year the Hawks repeatedly gave up big goals by not respecting the clock. Keith invariably seems to be on the ice and gives NO DIRECTION. Remember the Hawks also gave up a goal with 3 seconds remaining - 3 SECONDS!!!

Also Q actually START coaching the team! Ulf loves Rutta - fine, send both of them packing because Rutta is clearly not an NHL D-Man, regardless of how money Bowman gave him. Also whatever the rumoured plan is regarding Forsberg I don’t care. PLAY FORSBERG!

Some posters will say Ward played well - but did he? He was out of position and didn’t move at all across the crease to stop Staal who missed the entire open net. Should have been another goal. In a hockey game like this there are saves and then there are crucial saves that simply must be made. 3 SECONDS left, 23 SECONDS left that is when saves have to be made.

It was an embarrassing, immature way to lose. Competative teams simply don’t lose like this.
