I am sure Nylander would like a Kucherov / Panarin type bridge deal, but he is simply not near either of those guys. |

If he proves to be as good as either of those guys he will cash in, large, after the bridge deal. |

4x4.5 for Willie
6x9 for Matthews
8x9 for Marner
Matthews to get paid big time when JT contract is up. |

Don't like the idea of giving Matthews a contract that expires first year he's Ufa eligible. |

If it fits everyone in and both parties are fully on board then there is no problems. |

What does that even mean. He can just walk at 27 like Tavares did. I'd much rather be guaranteed he sticks around for another 7 or 8 years than 5 years. |

What do you think it means.
In a negotiation there are two parties....this case Matthews and the Leafs.....also there is a salary cap where you have to fit every player in at a certain number. I really didn't think it was too hard to understand.
And sure he could...The Leafs will be a top team in the league in 5 years. If he chooses to walk off a team like that then he has his heart elsewhere. |

Theres no such thing as everyone on board its a business. You think if Matthews falls off the map or gets the hurt the leafs are gonna honor any handshake agreement they had or Matthews wouldn't say all the right things to get him in position to pick his ideal place to play for boat loads of money as early as possible. Sign him to 8 now and you got him for all his best years and if he wants to walk then fine.
As far as making the cap work figure that out with the Nylander Marner contracts. Sign them for 4 or 5 years. |

You are talking as if these scenarios are likely.......you can't do that. Matthews is very likely not going to fall of the map.
I would say with very high confidence he is not going to walk from the Leafs in 5 years. It will be the Leafs prime years for contention there is zero excuses for not getting him signed again.
The Leafs are paying guys millions to figure all this cap stuff out. They know a hell lot more than any of us in that regard. |

I just don't see what the benefit for Matthews is either than giving him the opportunity to walk first chance he gets. If it's a 5 year deal it better be a hell of a sweetheart team friendly deal like Tavares was. If it's 5 years 11m leafs are idiots. |

It would be so they can fit guys under the cap for the duration of JT's contract. Then when JT's is up, whether he re signs or not Matthews gets paid big like JT did.
They would be sacrificing cap space in 5 years for a few years so they can have more space now. If Matthews is interested in that then the Leafs would too.
A lot of people get scared on here about the big three contracts....well you have to be creative and open to different ideas to get around this. |

If it all works out that way then great maybe they even win a few cups between now and then. maybe I'm too skeptical but listening to Matthews comments on the Nylander contract it doesnt sound like he's like crobsy willing to take less significantly less money and risk injury going forward to help the team win. Just feels like alterior motive if it's his camp pushing the 5 year contract. If he signed a McDavid contract he's set for life but he's in Toronto through his prime. |

Well The Leafs can offer him more money when the JT contract is off the books. He absolutely needs to take a tad less on an 8 year deal to fit everyone in...but on a five year deal then an 8 year deal he could potentially make a lot more in the long term...but also keep the band together.
We could even see Matthews sign before Willie. |

I don't know why I'm so worried about Matthews walking we'll just sign McDavid as a Ufa when he's available anyways. |
