And here I thought Sidney Crosby had actually been traded.

Because that would make sense.

What do you feel are the roster issues are?

I think that the signings of Cullen, Oleksiak, and Johnson were all mistakes. I think Oleksiak needs sheltered, as does Johnson and so does Schultz to an extent.

I don’t understand having that much money tied up into your defensemen especially when they aren’t really that good. That money could have been used in legit upgrades over Oleksiak and Hunwick.

They traded away Conor Sheary who was actually a decent middle six forward and replaced him with a broke down Cullen. I don’t hate the Sheary trade but I think they could have done better to bring it a bottom six winger. I would have rather had Kunitz than Cullen every day of the week.

I think that the line blender is really weird. I don’t see how having Brassard on a line with Sid helps, I thought they had an alright game— they had some chances but I still think Brass as a 3C would be better.

I don’t think The 4th line is skilled enough for Sprong (with Cullen as C) I think a 4th line of Simon-Sheahan-Sprong could do some damage but ultimately I’d like to see Sprong in a 3rd line role.

Actually, I pretty much agree dead on with most of this except I do hate the Sheary trade because of how they decided to fill out the rest of the lineup. I thought and still think very highly of Sheary. While I can understand the frustration from fans because he didn't consistently score, I thought he put up appropriate numbers for his salary.

Sullivan's obsession with a certain style of player is IMO going to hurt the lineup which chased Sheary out. I also firmly agree on Kunitz. For the price and what he's still able to bring it was foolish to not bring him in instead of Cullen.

Kunitz-Sheahan-Sheary would have been a superior 4th line as much of Sprong fan I am.

Rust-Brassard-Sprong is what I would have hoped to see as a 3rd. I do like Simon, but someone has to be the odd man out and I'm taking Sheary over Simon in the lineup.

Defense-wise? I'm not mad at them retaining Oleksiak, but I'm not happy with the commitment they've extended to him and yes, the JJ signing is IMO Scuderi-like.

In the past I would agree, he has.

But there's no way this title should have been taken seriously, as was the intent.

Resigning Oleksiak was fine but he was extremely overrated by the fans imo. I don’t see anything resembling a top 4 Dman regardless of what Yohe was preaching. It’s more the combination of 5.4 or more (depending on who’s slotted where) for a bottom pairing. That makes zero sense to me and I think the money could have been spent elsewhere whether it be in my depth up front or even just better defensemen. I would have rather not resigned O and not signed Johnson and threw money at de Haan.

I'll be interested if they tell us if he has soft tissue damage or is it just a fracture. Not saying it's good, but lets hope he didn't tear anything.

Yes, I had the same expectation of Oleksiak and was reaaaally hoping the Pens signed De Haan.

As much as I didn’t like Johnson’s contract, and still don’t, he hasn’t been our worst Dman in any of the games yet. He’s been fine. Furthermore I don’t think there is anyone showing more effort than he is through 4 games. Really the only one consistently taking the body and moving players off the puck.

If Maatta has to play with a good player to be a good player, then he isn’t a good player. He’s looked awful to me and don’t think he deserves to be in the lineup with these efforts so far.

I’m tired of Hagelin already playing with 2 of the best offensive players in the league and he can only put up .25 points per game.

Would be nice to see Brassard wake up and get what everyone said we were getting in him.

These are really good points from the last thread. If Maatta plays down to his partners level, maybe people should start taking exception to him being the 3rd highest paid dman on the team. Good players should elevate other team mates.

I really feel strongly that Maatta needs to be with Letang. Let Dumo strengthen another pair.

Riikola’s game most resembles Letang IMO, so I’d do:

Maatta/Letang
Dumo/Riikola
Oleksiak/JJ

I don’t think Dumo is that great away from Letang. I believe that are studs that elevate team mates and there are complimentary players that work well with others. I think Dumo and Maatta fall into the complimentary category. Letang is obviously a stud. Whereas the rest of the Pens D is average. While I do agree that Johnson hasn’t been terrible in the short sample, I just feel like without Schultz now, the Pens identity on the blue line is kind of awkward. I don’t really think they have the right mix of puck movers to get the forwards the puck.

I’m 50/50 with you on Dumo. Is he a number 1 on his own? No, but I think he’s more than a complimentary player. There are times he’s risen to the occasion in Letangs absence.
