I'm convinced they're gonna announce he's joining management.

I have no idea how it affects cap space and it doesn't really matter as the Habs have plenty/ won't add much until maybe a ufa this summer.

- Scabeh

I did a quick looksie on the CBA - nothing I can find on this. I quick Googling also turned up nothing.

The reason why I'm so obsessed with this is because I want to know how it affects Patrick Marleau's contract.

Next year: $3 million signing bonus on July 1st, $1.25 million in salary.

What happens if there is a mutual termination on July 2nd? Do we get cap relief? How much?

We need a capologist in here, although there's a very good chance that even the NHL doesn't know the answer to this question.

In the no-cap era nobody cared.

Nobody knows - or cares - what MLB players make unless the deal is exceptional. It's not discussed, ever.

The Nylander saga is sucking the life out of the Leafs. We should be focusing on their exceptional play, but that isn't possible.

The cap isn't good for the sport, it's only good for the billionaire owners.

- TrashPanda

MLB is a perfect example of why it's important to have a hard cap. The disparity between bottom feeder clubs and those at the top is over 100M! And, of course, those top clubs are nearly always the usual suspects - Yanks, Red Sox, Cubs, Dodgers, Giants, et al. which makes the playoff race every year less and less intriguing (in my estimation, anyway... speaking as a baseball superfan, FWIW).

I would argue that baseball is broken precisely because it lacks a parity mechanism that helps maintain competitiveness across the board.

The only reason the media doesn't play up salaries in baseball as much is because it's established that smaller market clubs (of which there are many) will never be able to afford the Bryce Harpers of the world. There's a weird cognitive dissonance at play in baseball where fans and the media kind of decide to collectively look the other way when it's clear that more than half of the clubs in MLB will not - or maybe never truly - compete.

At the end of the day, the media will play up any angle they can to try to drive clicks and viewers. For hockey, the hard cap creates that narrative but I think you're over-estimating the affect it's having on the Leafs (who are 10-5, despite missing Nylander AND Matthews). I also think you're over-estimating the affect it's having on the non-hardcore fanbase who likely don't really care nor waste too much time investing themselves in the conversation. Hell, even for the diehards I expect all of this salary speculation is, for the most part, more a bloviating time sink than an actual threat to our enjoyment of the game.

If the hard cap was removed from the NHL, the Leafs would no doubt always be one of the top spenders - which would be great for Leafs Nation but would ultimate undermine the competitiveness of the game as smaller market clubs would struggle.

Frankly, I don't care if billionaire owners make more or less money. I just want an entertaining product to watch that has the least amount of predictability as possible.

From TSN:

Bergevin said Plekanec will not count against the cap for the remainder of the season, since it was a mutual termination.

Hmmmmmm....

Hey boys, I think I may have found $6,250,000 in cap space for next year!!!!!!!!

Come on man... Patty's gotta play out the rest of his contract and sign for one more year somewhere so he can reach the all-time games played record. If he stays healthy he'll be 5th all time by the end of this year.

Technically speaking, there's nothing preventing him from agreeing to mutual termination of his contract, and then a day later signing a new deal with a different team.

30 other teams would poop out a cow, but hey, that's 30 other teams' problem, not mine.

This will help us for sure.. All we need to do is get Tavares to "Mutually Agree" to terminating his contract and then we can finally afford Marincin

What about signing again with the leafs for whatever he’s owed the rest of the year after the bonus? Teams would lose their poop.

If by "teams" you mean "Vancouver Canucks fans", I 100% agree with you.

July 1 - 3 million signing bonus
July 2 - retires
July 3 - realizes he doesn’t want to give up the dream and signs 1 year 1.25 million dollar contract.

Doesn’t lose a penny and gets to play with the leafs for another cup run at very reasonable price.

I'm guessing there's rules and restrictions regarding mutual termination of contract, but I really wouldn't know where to look. Not in the CBA.

I just called up Google Maps, and it opened with a view of downtown North Bay.

Really franking weird.

But if you are ever in North Bay, it looks like you can walk to the Heritage Railway & Carousel Company, the Dionne Quints Museum and the North Bay Museum - all within spitting distance of each other. And then head up to Main Street East for a drink at Moose's Cookhouse!

There has to be rules against that, otherwise teams like the leafs would be taking advantage of things like that.

I assume Sparks will be getting the nod for the Saturday game against Boston?

Boston will be looking for a huge bounce back win after giving up 8-9 goals last night.

Hopefully Sparky can stand on his head!

- LeafGuy89

This would be stupid. Sparks should play vs New Jersey and Andersen should play vs Boston.
