Like the trade and I know nothing about Pettersson. It’s like management wants to acknowledge the terrible Johnson signing but they’ll sit ruhwedel or rikkola instead.

Like Sprong ... Marcus was expendable on the back end .. Big kid can skate and make solid decisions... tons better than JJ even now as a rookie. I know that’s a low bar.

While I was always hopeful and optimistic about Sprong's potential, I don't think this is going to be the end-all-be-all that people are making it out to be. I'm sure both will benefit from a change of scenery. I think Pettersson will have a bigger impact, but that's just my opinion.

I was just hopeful that when Sprong was traded (and I knew he would be) that he would have been in a package for a substantial player. This lukewarm trade wasn't how I would have done it. I don't have any trade ideas in mind, I just thought it would have been like Maatta and Sprong for _X_ or Brassard and Sprong for _X_.

Hope the kid is good with “goal prevention“ since that seems to be HCMS ‘s new yardstick.

Oh wow. Petterson has the potential to be a middle pairing dman. Good set up player that's tall a lanky. Has trouble putting on weight. So even though he is tall he not very physical. Think he got passed up by josh mahura and jake dochtin on the depth chart. But he's a good pick up by the penguins. Still raw. And he is a above average skater.

Can a penguins fan tell me something about sprong?

He's been in Sullivan's doghouse from the beginning. It's hard to know what you have in Sprong because he rarely got a look with quality players, although he did fall flat on his face in the preseason on the top line. I know it sounds ridiculous to judge him on the preseason, but the Penguins were trying to hand him the top line RW job. Crosby and Guentzal were basically shredding the minor league talent, and Sprong just bombed. He looked lost. Everything went down hill after that. Recchi came out publicly and said they weren't happy with him. I can't deny it. I watched it. Kid looked terrible.

He definitely has a sick shot, but didn't seem to find himself in position to use it (linemates being crap is the likely cause). The knock on him is defensive awareness. I tend to agree with this. It was certainly Sullivan's issue, but other Pens fans will say otherwise.

Rutherford screwed up a few years ago by keeping him on the roster instead of sending him back to the Q (sent back after 18 games) which unfortunately is why he's waiver eligible. Undoubtedly he would benefit from more time in the AHL. IMO he has a decent chance of developing into a nice player, but I'd say he's more of a project than I originally thought. There's a good chance that a change of scenery makes all the difference. I think Sully beat the kid up too much and his offensive game suffered significantly.....really curios to see if this is the case.

Just to add to madmike"s post.

Sprong had a string of games last year when he was throwing his body around in the o zone like Ovi used to. It seemed to coorilate with his best hockey in the NHL. In that little stretch he had a posession rating of 60 some percent with Sid and, I think it was, Simon.

Anyway, if set free he could be offensively productive. I'm guessing atleast a 20 goal scorer, but no defense to be seen.

Oh, the negative, he's going to have to develop at the NHL level and the coach is going to HAVE to just let him play hockey. Meaning... He will probobly cost a few games here and there to unlock his full potential
