I work with a sour grapes Islanders fan who has himself convinced that Matthews is coming to Arizona this summer. I wouldn't say it's never going to happen. Maybe when his career is in it's twilight, like so many former players have when signing with Toronto in the past. |

Let's face it, it's all people who hate the Leafs that has this dream that every single thing will blow up in the Leafs faces.
The media also is capitalizing on this. I hear so much they love the Leafs, yet everyday I read and hear how every young player is leaving the Leafs. They barely even discuss the team's play.
It's complete fantasy. Matthews and Marner are staying, Leafs have the cap room. Arizona does not even have the actual $ to sign him. They owe more $ than the entire value of their franchise.
One day when he's past his prime, maybe if they still have the Coyotees, but there hasn't been an offer sheet in 5 and a half years. Stop dreaming. |

No offer sheets since the disaster of ROR with Calgary over 5 years ago, yet all of a sudden, all Leaf players are getting offer sheets.
Not a single offer sheet for Nylander I see. |

No big loss... Matthews career projection is an over paid band aid. |

Sucks to have a guy who has 16 goals in 16 games this season. |

Media make so much $ off of the Leafs they have created this idea every young Leaf player will get an offer sheet, even though that makes no sense. They do it for the clicks.
Enjoy suckers! |

Speaking of over paid band-aid, any word on when Lucic is due to score again. I assume he's still on the roster. Right? |

And the Coyotes would still have to exist and be able to afford the most expensive free agent contract in the history of the NHL
I have asked repeatedly where this $ will come from and no one has an answer. |

Yeah not likely to happen, although I swear the majority of people I see floating the possibility are leaf fans. |

That's because Matthews is the only Leaf worth risking an offer sheet. Price is too steep for the likes of Nylander, Marner and company. |

If that's the case then why on earth would the Oilers have given draisaitl that massive contract???? Its not like was going to get it elsewhere. |

I agree completely, an offer-sheet is HIGHLY unlikely, to the point where it's just a simple dream that lives because it's in fact a legal tactic in the CBA. Never going to happen.
That said, I don't think it's out of the question at all for this kid to go back to Arizona when his next contract is expired. Much the same as Tavares I could see Matthews going home to play in his late 20's.
Technically Sean Couturier is the first Phoenix born player to make the NHL. I believe he was 6 or 7 when his family moved back to New Brunswick but he was in fact born there and lived there as a kid. Matthews was born in California but raised in Phoenix.

But for that to happen, he'd have to turn his back on the franchise he probably just led to several championships, and a place where he is worshiped like a God, and where he will at this point be considered the best player to ever wear their uniform. - James Tanner

The Coyotes debt is 103% of their value.
But then again Forbes is a liberal rag, so who really knows? |

Aside from what the Yotes would have to pay Matthews, there's also the four first round picks they'd have to give up. |
