Simply put, this is just not a very good team as it stands.

How far is Schultz away from beginning to get back?

Gonna be a looong season. Trades aren’t the answer although GMJR surely will try something and he’s working from a position of weakness given the “win now” philosophy.

Everybody keeps saying February. Not sure if that's early Feb or late. Gonna be awhile unfortunately.

I’m pretty sure when I counted out the time table when it happened I got March, so I’d guess late Feb.

Is there any truth to what Ek posted. That they are talking to St. Louis about Parayko? That might help but at a very high cost I am sure. And would adding him help the Goaltending issues by the transitive property?

While some "writers" have suggested the Pens and Blues are good trade partners, I've yet to see a legit source state any real reports.

That being said, EK said one of the players the Pens are 'looking at' is Parayko. You can infer what you will.

I think the Pens have a few teams that make good trade partners right for larger deals. DET, ANA, LAK and STL come to mind. MIN and AZ to lesser extent.

That's why I think they should make a deal for RHD above all else. All these left handed D kind of stink on the right. Maybe they just stink period. Oleksiak is trash right now. Actually I though Rikolla had a couple nice games with Maatta and then they traded for Pettersson and we haven't seen him since.

I think they need two things: RHD and an impact top-nine winger.

How this all shakes out will be interesting to see. I think they like Oleksiak too much to move him. I would trade him ten times out of ten over Maatta, but I just don't see it happening.

I also liked how Riikola's game was developing and would rather see him paired with Petterson than JJ, but we all know the chances of that happening.

I liked Oleksiak when he first arrived. He played a harder game while being conservative on the rush. Now, he's barely hitting anyone and thinks he's Paul Coffey. I think his board play is below mediocre even though he has the size and strength to excel in that department. I have no desire to see JO skating around the oppositions net like he frequently does. All I'm thinking when he's literally behind the other teams net is what forward (Kessel, Guentzal) is going to get blown past after we turn it over.

They seem to be taking the Schultz approach with Petterson. Basically 3rd pairing, low stress, minutes. Honestly, he looks good in those minutes and I think he'll develop.

And, again, Cullen should never see ice again in the NHL. Bring up Blueger!!!!

It is possible to have the first two lines play a different system than the bottom two. Trying to make everyone do their best Lemieux impression hurts this team. Half the reason the Islanders are treading water this year is their fourth line knowing how to play to their strengths.

Completely agree with the RHD , but I don't think we need a winger. Realistically, we fill out our top 9 with top 6 forwards anyway our lineup is constructed. I think all of our problems stem from the D adn their inability to do anything but throw-up on themselves when they have the puck in the d-zone. I would be okay with trading anyone, outside of Crosby and Malkin, for a legitimate talent on D. Even Guentzel. Not that I want him gone in anyway, but we need a more skilled D

They've actually been playing very well for the most part the last 15ish games. Ive been checking all the fancy stats to back up my eye tests and they have been out corsi'n, out possession'n, out chancing and out shooting most teams most nights and have been rewarded with at least a point in a lot of those games for doing so.

If you mean as it stands because they're missing some wingers, then maybe yes. They havent been quite as effective without Horny.

This RW blog is like an overreaction blog this time because it was a loss to a team that hadn't won in 8 games.

Not one of the D-core has stepped up in the absence of Schultz. Moving from LD to RD is a challenge but you still want someone to accept that challenge. We constantly read about how disappointing Johnson is but I am disappointed in the development of Maatta and Oleksiak. Oleksiak has played RD and really should be the guy to step in and take the reigns. Neither seems to be any more than a bottom pairing, constantly shielded defenseman.

Agreed with the calling up of Bleuger 100%, as well as keeping Cullen out of the lineup for him, but as a lockerroom guy, I don’t mind him being here. The team has taken some hits with lockerroom chemistry and it is somewhere Cullen can help.

Healthy...

Jake-Sid-Horn
Pearson-Geno-Kessel
Simon-Brass-Rust

I’m a big fan of Simon and I’m hoping Rust finds his game, but when you watch teams like Tampa and Toronto, if the Pens are going to compete they need an upgrade that either pushes Pearson down to the 3rd or Rust to the 4th.

Pens need a Nyquist or Zucc.
