Absolutely disagree. Maatta is a very good 2nd pairing guy and I think he’s gonna be the Dumo to Schultz when he comes back.
- j.boyd919

Maatta can play any role you ask and excell at it. He plays the PK, PP, shutdown D, offensive D... He can be a 1/2/3/4/5/ or 6... That's versatile for 4mil a year... No way he's going anywhere!

He is worse than hunwick and costs more. You're delusional to think otherwise.
- Guile

People see a few big hits and think he’s playing okay. It’s the same poop when people remember Letangs mistakes. They only remember JJs few hits. A few hits don’t make up for leaving your partner on an island to defend a 2v1 because you made an atrocious pinch at the blue line or chased a dude behind the net and your partner had to cover two dudes in the slot.

Edit... making me do graphs off my phone. Hunwick > Johnson. No comparison.

Ryan, a question...

If you HAD to pick an attribute that Jack Johnson brings to the Penguins that is positive (stay with me here, but you HAVE TO say something), what would that be?

- Doogs

If he stays healthy all year at 3.5 it really isn’t that bad. Could’ve been better but mostly just whiny stats boys around here.

This begs the question, what is the best 3 rd line forward? Defensive first. Two way player? What say ye?

Kunitz once had a great word on his hits stat when it would be way or up down certain months. Was along the lines of if he is hitting a lot, the team doesn't have the puck and they are chasing. When he hits less they score and win more.

He chews. When Schultz is healthy they have 7 Dmen better than him.

We're going to trade for Justin Schultz in about a month. That will have to do.

Kind of strange they'd be moving him after just getting him. I know they need forwards badly however.

Heavy cap hit, but he is damn good and what we need. Maatta for him and then we figure out the ~1.7 mil difference.

There’s no issues with 40 point defensemen. Dude goes to museums and doesn’t kick it with the boys. Thats the problem. It’s retarded.

Honest question. Do you guys think Mike Sullivan just thinks advanced fancy metric stats are garbage or what? JJ is not coming out when Shultz is back. So what conspiracy theories are out there to why Sullivan keeps playing him when coachingcheatsheet.com tells him otherwise? I’m not really a supporter of JJ, just want an explanation from stat nation on this one.
Edit. I have to be a bit if a sarcastic Richard on here but I really want to know your opinions.

He's the slowest of the pens dmen, but he's been looking a lot smoother recently with an effortless stride. It's weird, but over the last 10 games or so he looks like a completely different skater.

Old school hockey minds will never die out. Johnson is almost exactly what the older hockey minds like and think they need to see.

I think it has to do with knowing his partner... He reads the game so well, he blends into a role to compliment his partner. When he's with 58, he plays Defensive, 8 more aggressive, and he had to learn the new guys...

Sullivan has already said in interviews that he uses analytics as a coaching tool. So no, he does not think they are garbage.

I think this “slow” reputation is overblown. Maatta is not a super fast skater, but he’s far from “slow as hell.” IMO he has some skating issue against the rush.

I’d say his issue is more of skating “skill” and not “speed.” When play goes the other way, there just seems to be an issue sometimes in adjusting his skating.
