I didn't re-up my Athletic subscription, but I am curious to the grades he gave JJ and Cullen. I always thought he was one of the better out of the bunch, but at the same time is bias has always been there IMO, which is why I look to guys like Jesse Marshall and Ryan Wilson for information on the team. Jesse is easily the best Pens writer on the web in my opinion. Pensburgh guys are okay too. Gretz is usually solid.

C+ for JJ and B for Cullen.

Cullen got a solid B. Said that the fan base was being unfair to him and that all is well for him. I think it’s pretty clear that he’s taken a step back and believe that our team would be better off playing Sheahan at 4C, so I’m not sure how you can give a guy who’s not optimizing the roster a B.

Johnson got a C+ again saying that the fan base was being unfare and that he’s been better on defense than people are giving him credit for and that the first year on a new team can be rough. Although that’s not a super hot take (though still wrong), Maatta also got a C+, and insinuating that Johnson’s been generally as successful as Maatta this season is insane.

Kessel got a B- for being an incomplete player.

Just like in the news media, opinion based journalism and "reporting" has basically merged. Now we get "reporting" through the filter of some individuals opinion.

Anyway, Seth Rohrbaugh and Jessie Marshall are awesome. I think Yohe has gotten lazy. That mid-season grade thing is a pretty rote concept. Then he follows it up with giving JJ a C+ and backs it up with zero facts.

As an aside.... Dave Molinari was the standard for a beat writer. The guy reported the facts and left the opinions to the columnists. The Post Gazette rewarded him with a demotion and gave Jason Mackey his job.....who is another Yohe clone.

- madmike71

I think Mackey is significantly dumber than yohe but I take the rest of your point. I definitely think Yohe’s quality has dipped since joining The Athletic and I can’t really explain that. Maybe the meat grinder that was DK on Pittsburgh Sports brought his best work out because he was constantly watching his back and worried about getting fired.

Marshal is definitely becoming my go to Pens guy. Actually bothers to substantiate his claims rather than “this guy is a diva and thus the team would be better without him” crap.

Wow sounds like a bunch of BS. Anyway to your Sheahan 4c thing I'd go farther and trade Sheahan to make some more cap space for room for a possible Brassard 3c swap and maybe a JO trade for LW and have Grant be the 4c. Save some cap space and Grant is playing pretty solid this year or at worst on par with Sheahan for less money.

LOL woof. Yeah. The B for Cullen is only because Yohe enjoys having him on the team, not because he’s good at hockey. JJ grade is just trying to suck on GMJRs knob a bit.

I definitely agree with this. If Sheahan isn’t gonna be used as a C he should be traded. I don’t see a huge point to keeping him around because he’s a really mediocre wing. See if we can turn his and JO’s cap hit into something more useful.

I’ve noticed that Sully likes to put multiple Cs on certain defensive face offs.

For sure hes a mediocore center if you dont deploy him with good wings, he can kill penalties well and has proven he can step up i dont want to trust him in the playoffs tho but brassard has been awful if winnipeg wanted him i would take Perreault not sure his contract tho

U make it to south bend for the game vic? GO BLUE!

Yeah that's why I was saying move Sheahan and JO for possibly a LW or open up some space for a Brass/New 3C trade

First two lines with two ES goals. Lovin it. Maybe the Brass line can chip in.

Brassard has a good look. Ward caught a piece of it with the tip of his glove.

I'm just glad Sid and Geno's lines are clicking at the same. When that happens the Pens can beat anyone.
