HIGH DANGER SCORING CHANCES LAST NIGHT

5v5

1ST Period Leafs 5 Preds 1
2nd Period Leafs 8 Preds 4

Third Period Leafs poop the bed.

Maybe they need to shoot a bit more, but it was a good game. You should try watching it sometime

- annoyed

It was Rinne vs Hutch .... if the Preds didn’t win now that would be something to speak of. Leafs had plenty of good looks ...

on another note.... Nothing Is better than Bama getting blasted and Saban looking like he took shots of castor oil.

What was the verdict on the offside last night?

They never showed it in the arena.

- Atomic Wedgie

Good call. Was offside. Didn't really affect the play but the rule is the rule. Matthews could/should have had a hat trick last night.

1st round exit and I would wager that he's gone in the off-season.

I think the big question is what do the Leafs do with the 4 million in cap space that they have for the remainder of this year.

Meh, Matthews blasted a shot off the post, Kap bounced 1 off the post and a called back goal...pretty even game in my eyes...it is what it is...on to the next game. I was just responding to the tit that said: Leafs were soundly outplayed

Ya i could see that happening.
As for this years cap space, they have to go for it. This is their best chance cap wise. They need to go all in for a cup run.

Is the 4 million in cap space prorated or will they have something more in the lines of ~12 million?

Trade deadline cap space works differently.

The Leafs have 26 million in deadline cap space....

They have an opportunity here to add just about anyone without even retaining salary like most teams need to do.

I don't think they'll do a he'll of a lot. Still re-building the organization after 15 odd years of mismanagement. Think they'll stay the course and wait for Marleau to drop off the cap before going for it.

Kids are still learning how to win like the Caps and Preds had to. Should expect to see Bracco, Grundstrom, Lillybust make the jump within the next 12 months. Sandin not too much longer after with Brooks and possibly Engvall

I'm saying it in the terms that they can add a salary that averages out to 4 million dollars a year

My understanding is say you had 3 million in cap space to start the season, but didn't use it for 2/3s of the season (before the trade deadline) you can acquire a 9 million dollar player which equates to a 3M cap hit.

obviously a simple example, but you get the idea. I also could be off or simply misrepresenting the rule so maybe Santo has a better grip on this.

Exactly this. The Leafs had much better looks and chances. They failed to execute offensively, but their defense was not bad at all. Nashville took a lot of low chance shots - perhaps designed to force an offensive zone face/off. But for all intents and purposes, it was a 2-0 game that could just as easily been 4-2 for the Leafs.

Nashville counter punches really well when teams get over-aggressive, and that's what we saw in the third. I'd like to see the Leafs stretch less and use shorter passes when playing these teams that try and take away space - especially in the neutral zone. They have the speed and talent to make use of that type of execution.

This was far from a bad game. To me it's pretty encouraging. If they can start getting the PP to be more dynamic, and introduce some more progressive 5-on-5 breakouts, they will have even more weapons at their disposal.

Right.

So if they have a projected 4 million in cap space for the end of the season, they can add a 12 million dollar player at deadline.

Honestly I’m still confused by it I just skimmed an article on the Athletic.

I can’t remeber exactly how it works but it’s a prorated cap and some other poop that involves sending players up and down like Moore has.

But no other true contender has even close to as much as the Leafs do...

They have $4m left in expenditure, so it's basically prorated as you've said.

But bear in mind that Dubas has said that he is more interested in hockey trades with term than rentals, and that while the Leafs can be up to 10% over the cap for next season up until October 2019, they also need to keep that overage free as a defense against the nefarious offer sheet.

If there's a decent value rental available he'll do it. He'd just rather not waste assets on rentals if he can help it.

But that's just like, my opinion, man.

I'm with you. Looking at the rentals available, that's probably why he's looking for players with term. Most of the realistic rentals suck.

Nope, that’s with Hyman and Andersen.

LTIR does affect it I think....but having those two on the IR might fluctuate the space a tad.

But in the end it’ll be around 24-26 million.
