I'm with you. Looking at the rentals available, that's probably why he's looking for players with term. Most of the realistic rentals suck.
- Monkeypunk

I think they want a D with term.

I think they’d absolutely get a forward rental.

I think that's with Andersen and Hyman on IR tho
- TheMussel

It would also include Horton's $5.3m which the Leafs don't want to apply to IR because then bonus structure/next year's cap/different Athletic article.

Yep, what you see is likely what you will get.

Either way any contender that has over 20 million in space is going to add. It’ll be the last time they have this much space to add players.

After this year it’ll be harder and probably cost more to have the other team take dead cap space or retain.

I would not be surprised to see the Leafs make a big move for a D with a forward then add a forward rental to replace him.

Craig custance per the Athletic said his sources believe Dubas wants to make a big move. And is willing to trade a big piece because of future cap.

So what's a big piece with a current cap hit?Nylander? Media has been trading Nylander for nearly 3 years now.

I think it could be but I doubt it would be Nylander.

Johnnson, Kap or maybe some prospects.

A lot of people would balk at trading Lilybust...but if they can bring in a top D. They have Rielly, Top D, Dermott as a strong core. Z as the 4th D. Then the only hole you have to fill is the bottom pairings which Sandin has proved to be a better prospect this season than Lilybust.

I’d do it if it helps us get to a cup.

Craig custance mentioned Lilybust as a player the Leafs would feel comfortable trading due to Sandins emergence.

If we traded those prospects and picks for a top dman with term, we'd better make sure we'd win a cup this year because it'd make an already precarious cap situation potentially catastrophic, where we wouldn't just lose Gardiner, we'd also lose other roster players and not have those young guys who are cost controlled to be able to fill in the gaps.

The worst thing the Leafs can do this year is go for it. They're so close, they just need to ride it out another season.

With the need for RHD being paramount, I hope they do not shift out Lillybust. He's got all the potential to be a very useful cheap dman when they'll need him the most.

If they add a top D they don’t have many gaps to fill in D....at all.

Rielly-Hamilton(example)
Dermott-Zaitsev
?-?

There is two spots to fill for a considerable amount of time and it’s the bottom pairing.

The Leafs are at the point where they can pick what prospect they like and trade the other one and it’s not a big deal.

If they trade Lilybust they could even maybe keep their 2019 pick and have a player that is under ELC where it counts even more...when Rielly, Andersen, Kadri contracts are up.

Ok following on from that are we thinking that the following dcore is good enough to win a Cup with while also losing Nylander or someone with a cap hit from the forward lineup? (I'm adding Sandin only because he's probably going to be the best of what's remainìng in future)

Rielly Hamilton
Dermott Zaitsev
Sandin/Rosen Holl/Ozighanov

I seriously doubt it myself

No.
Its not the worse thing.
This is the best year for them to go for it...cap wise.
Next season theyll barely have any cap space.
I dont see them trading lily just yet as he may replace gards.
But cap wise, they will never be in this position again with the talent they currently have.

100% doubt that. With the way his contract is set up there's no trading him away this year. Along with Dubas' comments. The media (and a portion of fans) just have to get past this uninformed obsession with trading Nylander after every loss.

I don’t, Dermott and Sandin will only get better. And there’s always ways to add a 2nd pairing D at the deadline next year.

And that's the issue. Anyone they bring in has to be on an exoriong contract becuase as of next year it goes away. If they're going for it this year they are looking at Kronwall and Simmonds as their best options. The risks outweigh the rewards.

This window is a media driven (and some fans) thing about the Leafs, trying to create a scenario where the Leafs should go for it and take away some of the building blocks they've put in place.

I've never heard about this ELC window affecting any other team than the Leafs. Hasn't been mentioned with anyone else.

If the Leafs don't make a splash and don't win the Cup (they won't win it this year) it gives the media some kind of opportunity squandered angle to bring back some negative press. When really, believe it or not, we are still rebuilding after finishing dead last 2.5 seasons ago

Meh, i doubt hes traded, but if dubas wants to pull off a big deal, i would think he could be involved. We'll see.
As for what dubas said, meh it holds no water. Gms lie or change their minds all the time. If trading overpaid-ander makes the team better, dubas will do it.

That D is worse than the one we're icing now. (Taking into account rookie growing pains with Rosen/Sandin)

Ya its not media driven only, its driven by simple math.
Rebuild is pretty much over, 3 of their main young players will be commanding big salaries, they just signed a double digit cap hit star.
Rebuild done.
Now its time to become a cup contender.
Again, cap wise, they'll never have this much space with the current level of talent on the roster.
Not to say they cant win in down the road.

Unfortunately, it looks like there's not much available as rentals just yet.

And there's the rub. If trading away Matthews and Marner makes he team better Kyle will do it. It's his job to do it. But the media have traded Nylander for Tanev, Gudbransson, Faulk, Slavin, Dumba, Pesce, Seabrook, Hamilton, Nurse, Parayko, Pietrangelo, any Ducks dman and a multitude of others.

I think it's safe to say the media are just naming dmen and trading Nylander for them

could add Stone for 1st round pick.
Ottawa might want to save their face a bit and at least have a 1st rounder...
