I'm honestly of the belief Kapanen is the player being moved to improve the defence. Not because of any personal preference, I really like the player and he's shown a penchant for shining in big games. I just think the tea leaves show Nylander staying and Kapanen/Johnsson leaving.
- BetterCallSaul

Makes no sense to trade Kapanen over Nylander. Kapanen is cheaper, can contribute similar numbers while Nylander clears more cap space and brings back a better defender. If they move Kapanen for defense, they'll be getting a lesser defender and further complicate their already complicated cap situation. Or, be getting a rental, which is stupid.

I totally get all of that. Because the cap is not directly tied to cash, cap accrual is basically percentage of yearly cap hit based on time on roster. So a guy like Moore has a cap hit of 925k. Which means that every day that Moore is on the NHL roster, he accrues basically 5k of of a cap hit. So every day he's not on the roster, and the player he is replacing is on LTIR, the Leafs save $5k. The same would apply for Kaskisuo, but he makes $675k, so his daily rate is closer to $3.5k. But what I meant was that this is basically scrounging for pennies in the couch cushions when compared to the money we'd need.

What I don't understand is how the Athletic and Cap Friendly arrive at this $24 million number.

All I can see is that *IF* the Leafs were to plop everyone currently injured on LTIR, then they would open up a whole new world of cap space - Horton + Andersen + Ennis + Hyman . . .but Andersen and Hyman are apt to have minimal stays on IR at most anyway, and they don't want to use Horton's LTIR unless they have to.

That's why I'm confused. But you know what. I'll try googling it and see if I can find the math for myself.

- Monkeypunk

I think they're getting that 24M number by talking about guy's total cap hits, rather than what will be left at the deadline.

So, rough math, if hte deadline is at the 3/4 mark of the season(is it?), then that 24M cap hit means the Leafs are only on the hook for 6M, so that's all the space they need.

If Willy fails to impress in rest of season, then I could see a move made in the summer. Dubas may have promised him otherwise, but that statement most likely based on performance from Willy. Not seeing it thus far. Can't see Kappy going anywhere. Since our team is built on speed, how would him leaving help us?

That'd be the worst time to move him as his value would be low and with his cap hit, nobody will give you fair value.

Closer to it now than if he sucks the rest of the season and playoffs. At least if he gets moved now, the excuse is built in that he's behind a step because he missed a quarter of the season and didn't have a proper training camp. But if he goes the whole year and the playoffs sucking, he'll be viewed as an overpaid player who held out for money and can't deliver.

Yes. If you cant sell a GM on a 15 game sample size midway through the year then you suck at your job.

Nylander should get a solid player back still. Still has back to back 61 point seasons.

Hamilton has a 50 point season. Pretty fair deal.

Sure.
Willy is a 7m 20 goal scorer.
Everyone wants one of those.

Don Cherry was pissed when Nylander signed. Saying “7M for 20 goals!” I guess Marner isn’t getting more than 7.5M.

That's what he is at the moment but we all know he has potential to be more than that. But if he poops the bed the rest of the season, your sentiment becomes more true. The door is open to get a 25 year old, 6'6", 210 RHD top pair D that makes 5.75 AAV. That's a pretty good opportunity for both teams to make a hockey trade.

Yeah, too bad they count assists, otherwise it'd be great to get Marner at that price.

Exactly. Which is why I didn’t and still don’t understand that “7M for 20 goals” argument.

Ah cool.
Marner is almost at willies best seasons total in half the games.

But ya 7m for a 20 goal floater is high.

I'm guessing canes gonna demand Willie or Kap + Sandin or Liljegren + a 1st.

Yeah... Then they can continue to be the black hole of offence that they are. Skinner on pace for 50+ goals. Lindholm is in the top 20 for points. Hanafin is having his best offensive year. Hamilton is crapping the bed. (frank) you, Bingo.
