Usually I'm at least in partial agreement with BS. Not with this blog. Petry at 5.5 for the next couple is a steal and he is a real good honest hockey player. The nights are few and far between when you don't get his all. To have him and Weber to bring the young guys along is ideal. Shaw is solid but he's injury prone, due to his style of play mostly. but we have tons of cap space so I'd like to keep him in case we make the playoffs. I know, huge if. I always like the idea of extra picks but these guys need tutoring also. I sometimes wonder if you have too many entry level players arriving at the same time you end up with the same fiscal mess the Leafs will be dealing with very soon. A gradual influx of young talent would serve the team well

I agree with you regarding Petry and Shaw being great players. My point is simply from a long term view point. Petry is heading into his 30's and having a career year. I don't see him as a long term fixture in MTL after his current contract and the Habs are looking to stockpile blue chip youth and picks for long term success.
With Petry's current level of play and contract he should be able to get a pretty fantastic return for a player that is likely gone in 2 seasons. From a management view, I think it makes the most sense to capitalize on Petry as an asset and try to bring in an incredible return.
If the price for rentals is already looking like a 1st rd pick then Petry will draw a solid amount more. If he is moved we just have to hope the assets coming in are top notch. If not, then wait until the draft when one of the GM's who lost in the playoffs due to RD depth comes back and pays for the help.

They could also move him at the draft and have as much if not more for him. This would allow the Habs to remain competitive till the end of the season.

The push for the 9th position in the conference is so important.

Very true as well. MB has some options and I think they are good ones

I think that unless someone comes over the top with a mega offer, it would take a deadline day frenzy to get the best return on Petry anyways... So it's likely it would come down to the 11th hr anyways

If the habs are still in the running for a playoffs spot, I see Bergy moving someone like Benn for a late pick, maybe acquiring a depth player for a B prospect/pick that he can sign medium term (he loves those moves).
I don't see him doing much this year to be honest...too early to do anything major in his "retooling" and he won't want to hurt his team in chasing a playoffs spot.
If MTL struggles before the TDL and look to be out, then he could move a guy like Petrydish
Yeah just what we need more mid to late first or second rounds draft picks that we Can t develops and lose on waivers for nothing.wtf.bullpoop blogger news again
Our beloved Habs presently hold the first wild card spot. I my opinion, Jeff Petry has been their MVP so far this season. In addition, he LIKES playing here, which makes him a bit unique. So why on earth would you trade him? He is healthy and locked into a "reasonable" salary and the team lacks veteran defense men so why and what for? You are also thinking w-a-a-a-y too far down the trough. Romanov, Brook et al are a long way away. Don't forget that we are talking about defense men.
Shaw is valuable, especially with TWO Stanley Cup rings, but they have been winning without him. He has had a good, but truncated season. His value would not be high due to all his concussions.
It's good to think about the future, but when you are in the race in late January, then you have one eye on the future and one on the present.
Personally, I would dump Drouin yesterday. Bergy needs to swallow his ego and trade him for a second rounder NOW. If you wait, say, another year, you'll get a third rounder. The Tampa deal was a mistake. Deal with it. He does not fit into this team which is hard working and unselfish. He has one good game in five and his hockey sense is sub par. Also, if you want to trade someone who would have good value, then you would trade Domi. He may be good now, but wait until the playoffs when the refs put the whistle away and he starts bouncing off opposing players like a pinball in a Bally table machine. You could get something really good for him now, especially if you add one of your 10 2019 draft picks. Then you slide Shaw to center. he is a Swiss Army knife player, and while not a natural center, neither is Domi. Get a power play quarterback defense men or a sniper in return.
