I would want a first line winger to score more than 20pts a year. That’s what we’ve seen so far.
- Der Kaiser

I’ve seen too many players with “potential” not work out

Is he gonna be a legit top6 winger for us?
To be that, he’s gotta score
Plain & simple

Can he finish?
Or is he another Armia?
*i liked Armia a lot bc of his “great shot” too

So let’s try him with Jack & see what happens

Points are a futile way to judge players who don’t get a ton of ice time or PP time.

It’s not a coincidence that Thompson magically got an assist in his first game with Skinner.

Tage made about 10 impressive plays last night, and his assist wasn’t even one of them.

Generating shots and scoring chances lead to goals and wins. He’s doing that in spades the last few weeks.

Also, Armia has developed into a solid player and his scoring has gone up in a bigger role.

He’s scoring at a 39 point pace for someone who was a “4th liner” in Winnipeg

But Thompson hasn’t really been converting on all these chances u say he’s generating...

WHY?

Because Sobotka isn’t Skinner or Eichel? Sobotka has had 3 glorious opportunities from Thompson that he’s failed to cash in

I liked them at first but the more I looked at it the logo is giant and with the fat stripes it looks like a big wrestling championship belt tied around their midsection

19game sample size
He’s getting his shot now with Shaw hurt,
playing with Drouin & Domi
If he can score enough, he’ll stay there
If not, then he’ll drop back down

Same with Thompson
If he’s gonna be a top6 winger,
then he’s gotta score!
That’s the bottom line

I didn’t ask why Sobotka isn’t converting...
we know why
He sucks

When Tage gets all these chances,
why isn’t HE converting?
And again...
if the answer is to play him with Jack,
then do it!

But that doesn’t really explain why he hasn’t been converting on the opportunities that he has had so far

And with Eichel anyone will. It won’t change my opinion on Thompson.

What Thompson is doing the last 16 games is leading our team in shot % and scoring chance %. Which means when he’s on the ice the Sabres do really well. It’s a good sign

I suppose they could play around with the sizing of those things though

I like the general design

I mean it’s obviously great if he does but it’s not the only thing that matters.

When he’s on the ice we control play, which means the other team isn’t scoring.

He’s also hit posts, and had some pucks come within inches of rolling in, like last night.

He isn’t a Skinner level shooter but it will get a little better at the very least in terms of %

You know what i meant
If Thompson is gonna be a top6 winger for us, the he has to start converting

It’s a red flag to me that he’s getting all these chances, but not scoring
Especially for a guy with such a great shot

All of his goals have been on his shot alone or plays he’s made all by himself.

If he’s in a talented top six he’s going to get a few gimme goals and it will look a lot better.

But yes I agree it has to get at least a little better.

But the process is there

I think it’s fair to at least question the lack of scoring by him
It’s one thing if he’s not getting the chances,
but he is

Is it just bad luck & it’ll start going in?
Hopefully
But we’ll have to see

The type player he is just worries me bc i saw a lot of similarities in Armia as a prospect
And while he’s turned out to be an ok player,
we need Thompson to be more than that

I just want to see him score more goals without using the toe drag to build the torque for the wrister that gives him power. He has crazy confidence and some really nice moves. I just want to see him score on quick wristers (like his last goal),or on different moves. The toe drag move is only gonna take him so far. This isn't me hating on the kid. I think he has potential

Just think, which of his goals has been a deflection or fortuitous bounce? He’s gotten exactly none.

Even Skinner who’s played out of his mind has had a few.

Guys who generate shots and chances eventually get some bounces.

I don’t think he will ever be a 15+% shooter

But is he a 20+ goal scorer with Mitts going forward?
If he’s not, then u gotta question where he fits in going forward

That’s why I’d at least give him a shot with Jack

I think by the end of this season,
Botts should make a determination on him
Either he’s gonna be that top6 guy,
or he’s gotta consider using him as a trade chip while he still has value

He can play on any line. It’s not like he’s been bad defensively, at all.

Again, the Sabres control play when he’s on the ice. He fits anywhere
