Peter Tessier: Listless Jets fall to Wild, again. The final score flatters the Jets who did not start playing hockey until late in the game.

The main difference between this years Jets and last years is that last year we had a quick strike offense, which would normally lead us to having a one goal lead very early in the game. The coaching staff looked like geniuses because they would score so early, other teams were forced to open up the game, which fit into what the Jets wanted to do.

This year, other teams have figured that out and it appears that the Jets struggle to make transitions. Which could be a reason why they haven't looked as dominating despite having a great record. I also do believe that this team has too much talent to lose.

Minnesota seems to have figured out the formula to beat the Jets.

Mark Scheifele played 26:34 last night.

Again where is this depth I keep hearing about?

It’s in the press box, or stapled to the bench. Maurice coaching gun out, and shot himself in the foot with it

....Anyways, there are goalies that play the puck with confidence and frequently and there are goalies that will wait for the play to come to them. Helle is a goalie that stays at home and let’s the play come to him.

Not criticizing Helle, but he is not a puck playing goalie. That can be an area maybe he can work on in the years to come.

Yes. Definitely an area for improvement. Mike Smith probably the best at it.

Keep in mind that all the goalies league-wide have lower save percentages this year. Might be the equipment change.....not really sure.

Minny has developed a game similar to Vegas. Its working for them. Hendricks was awesome last night. Miss the guy but I agree that we are a draft and develop team so its was good to have him around for a year but we must move on.

Our best Jet last night was Ben Chariot, whose game BTW has gotten leaps and bounds better than last year. I think he is the most improved Jet year over year.

If Myers is out any extended period of time it's going to be very noticeable. Let's hope for the best as he has been playing stellar hockey the last 25 games. Also as I mentioned in the last thread, if Niku gets a start then we must bring up another D-man which might endanger Petan.

Correction: We are currently 22 men (after subtracting injured reserve) and if Myers is injured it goes to 21 men, so lots of room for Petan to stay and still bring up more dmen.

Injuries are always a concern - wether you have them or worried about having them

My biggest concern from last night is - there exists a blueprint on how to beat the Jets ... been brewing since last year ... keep the Jets to the perimeter, play trap-like - seems to work ... PoMo needs to lead the adjustment to this

Bit of an achilles heal, IMHO

Does Patrick Laine actually have a pulse?
Best shot in the league but if he doesn't work to generate scoring chances what good is the shot?
Maurice should sit him down for a couple of games to send a message, no hustle and you watch the game from the press box.

That or similar actions seems to be the growing consensus on here. He's just not working hard enough and can often be seen gliding around instead of using his feet. He seems to be just that fraction of a second slow in response time when he has the puck on his stick when looking to make a play/pass. Its strange to see for a guy who has the quickest shot release in hockey.

That being said I can say that Matthews has also taken a step back , just not as much. It seems to be the Marner - Tavares show in T.O these days.

The late 3rd period rush showed a lot of speed from Laine (note that speed is very different from quickness) and it was good to see him skating with purpose. Hopefully that is something to build on.

Another thing about speed is that some of it is perception. Big guys like Laine, Mario Lemieux, Malkin, Burns , and even Myers look like they are lumbering around but they can actually be deceptively fast. It might take several of them one or two strides from red line to blue line as opposed to 4 or 5 from smaller guys like Gaudreau or Kane.

I'd like to see them put Morrissey back on the #1 PP instead of Trouba. I know they want a right shot up top to feed Laine, but it's just not working and other teams aren't respecting Trouba's shot, so it's not working like it would with Buff up there. At least Morrissey makes smarter/faster reads with the puck up top.

I agree. Trouba has been an eyesore on the PP. I would'nt even been opposed to seeing Chariot on the second PP unit while the injuries persist. Hardest shot on the team !

i might consider Myers on the top unit. He might not have the hardest shot, but at least he gets it on net. I think getting a shot through is the most difficult thing for any player, which Myers is great at!

Connor has been too quick moving to the front of the net. He needs to stay low, well below the goal line and sometimes behind the net to stretch and turn the defenders. this will open up lanes to Sheif and Laine. The pass from down low is a threat because it is an 'eyes forward' one-time shot and a higher percentage shot than the one coming from the half-boards. It can go to Scheif, Laine or back to Wheeler. Alternative is wrap around, or stepping to the front as he has been doing often.

Agreed. Not everyone is adept at feathering the puck through a plethora of legs. Hopefully he is not out too long.

Laine plays with a center that he has zero chemistry with and Maurice is oblivious to this and keeps shoving them together. Maurice is so slow to play and give the Jets draft and develop players a chance to play with other skilled players. If it wasn't for an injury to Little Scheifele may still be a 3rd line center. Maybe a minor injury to Little will force Maurice to play Roslovic with Laine, but I suspect he would promote Copp or Pereault to play with Laine. With the injury to Myers will Niku finally get a chance to play or will the Jets trade for another Morrow?

This I agree with. I am a huge basketball fan as well. Dwayne Casey would make bizarre decisions as well, like take out hot players so his starters got great minutes, or take out big men near the end of games when his team was trying to protect the lead. Dwayne was lucky that his team was so deep and talented that he got away with these decisions.

Paul Maurice is the same way. Makes no sense why Appleton, Lemieux and Roslovic are not being mixed with top 6 guys. The Jets continue to operate with a top 6 and bottom 6. What happened to creating a top 9? Also, what's up with Petan? i always wonder why he has not been given a real shot, did he sleep with another players wife/girlfriend, did he do illicit drugs, did he not wish Maurice's daughter happy birthday? Makes no sense why he's not playing. Why is Scheifele the second highest forward for minutes played? Someone, please answer these questions.....

I mean... it absolutely makes sense why Lemieux isn’t being mixed with top 6 guys... why not put Petan back with Wheeler? AKA the best hockey of Wheeler’s entire career stint

I agree that 3 years ago Petan got Wheeler out of a slump when Scheifele was injured. Then he was relegated to the 4th line and then press box. A line with Laine, Roslovic and Petan would have 2 pass 1st players with a pure goal scorer. Don't hold your breath to see Maurice do this.

It would likely be a defensive disaster, however. I’m all about Petan-Scheifele-Laine, tho...

Really liking Niku's game so far tonight. He has made several slick breakout passes and seems to be playing with swagger tonight.

Hoping Laine can get a goal tonight. It is amazing what confidence (or lack there of) can do to all aspects of your game (skating, hands, vision). Look for him to ditch his concrete skates after his next goal...

BTW.....I'm not much into the line blender type of coach. Its fine in pre-season and early in the season but not so much on the second half of the season. I think teams should try and develop consistent lines. Given enough time together eventually a chemistry does start to develop much in the same way the the TLC line became a success after playing together a lot the second half of last year. Same goes with the dynamic duo of Sheifele and Wheeler. If you play together long enough eventually I believe you figure things out and get used to each other's tendencies. By the playoffs you hope to have four lines who know each other well and in proper positions to play the system correctly.

That all being said I'd still like to see Laine be send down with the grinders and see what life is like at 8 minutes a game plus PP. Maybe he'll throw his Playstation away and watch some extra game tapes instead. I'm sure Lemieux or Appleton wont be shedding any tears and would relish the role on a second line for a few games.

Tanev's play continues to trend up. As an undrafted player, he has had to prove himself each year and he consistently brings it game in and game out. The measuring stick of consistency is one the most valued hallmarks of effort in my books and Tanev gets A+ for bringing it game in and game out.

He is UFA at the end of this year and I have to wonder what his next contract looks like either here or somewhere else. There is no way he signs for his 1.15 mill one year deal in the future. Someone is going to give him multiple years with a raise.
