- Hitchcock decides to reunite RNH with McDavid, while Draisaitl is paired with Chiasson and an anchor.

Wow both those rosters are terrible. Arizona's been rebuilding almost as long as the Oilers and doesn't have a McDavid. Hard to say whose management sucks more.
-17 goal differential makes it hard to make the playoffs.

while i dont like the oilers chances and give a pretty strong edge to the two teams currently holding the wildcards (avs especially and the wild to a lesser degree) for far more reasons than just being marginally ahead currently, it would be pretty cool if we snuck in and got a BOA in the first round.

id like our chances as an underdog with less pressure against the rival flames.

that said, if we got in and things shifted at the top and it was any of the jets, preds or sharks- theyll blow our doors off

not to say i dont think the flames are far inferior to any of those teams, just that the pressure, hype of boa etc might give the underdogs an edge. plus, their tending is pretty suspect

Wild card spot? When the Oilers have their skills competition they will probably find a way to lose that as well.

The fact that the Oilers are still in playoff contention with a roster like this is a (frank)ing miracle.

Well now I’m torn.

Squeaking in to a BOA, no matter how lopsided, would be pretty awesome. But it might also save Chiarelli’s job.

So torn...

No one else wants that spot....Ducks have lost ten straight and are still only a point out....Wild and Nucks are streaky....only ten points separates the last WC spot from the basement....strange season in the west

Will be curious how the team responds when Klefbom and Sekera return. I think a D healthy D corps is entirely capable of making the playoffs so if Chiarelli or the new guy can add two top-6/middle-6 wingers with term then I'm not completely opposed to pushing even if Chiarelli keeps his job. I'd rather the team win. Get to the playoffs and anything can happen- especially with McDavid.

As for the optimism, it's less optimism and more an acceptance that any objective analysis of Chiarelli would've had him fired during that 6-game losing streak (and well before that) so I have to operate knowing the higher ups are blind. With that in mind, I've chosen to accept that I won't be able to believe in whoever their new hire would be that I might as well cheer for the best results now.

Klefbom will help a lot there is no doubt there....the only question I have is do we keep Jones up as a 3rd pairing or send him back? You think Sekera is playing this year? I have doubts but I have been wrong before...seems odd they would dip into the LTIR money if he is coming back and if he does come back then that Manning deal is even more disastrous based on cap issues alone that will come if Sekera does return

If the Oilers could get a Draisaitl second line going they could get in. The only time he should play with McDavid is pp and overtime.
The penguins would suck if they were forced to play Crosby with Malkin on the same line. One big line doesn’t cut it. The Avs are nosediveing because of it.

Drai or Nuge need help on that second line regardless of which one plays down the middle....finding an actual top 6 player who can score goals would obviously go a long way in making it work instead of rotating the same guys in time and time again who cannot produce

I can’t cheer for loses even if that means Chia gets tossed out of the office....so I’ll just allow natural selection to run it’s course while still cheering for this team

For that to work, we need to add those aforementioned top-6/middle-6 wingers. Draisaitl or Nuge can't be expected to do more with the wingers he gets when running his own line. Lucic and Chiasson? Rieder and Chiasson? Lucic and Yamamoto? Add a Nyquist, Zucker or- heaven permitting- Stone and a lower end guy (Connor Brown, for example) and then the trickle-down impact of upgrading one line will impact the lines below it.

Ideally McDavid, Draisaitl, and Nuge would be top three centres. That’s as good or better than anybody.

I can accept a few losses in a row if I know that it'll result in Chiarelli losing his position. However, given the lack of action that came out of that losing streak, I can be confident that a losing streak like that isn't enough for Katz to do what everyone knows has to be done. As such, I have to assume that he and his cohort don't see things the same way and adapted my expectations to the point where losing has no benefit.

If/when Sekera comes back, I’m betting one of either Petrovic or Manning (or both) are waived. Hopefully neither clear.

Furthermore, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Sekera bought out if he does struggle upon his return. Bear, Bouchard or Lagesson will get the call to the bigs.

Does the latter prediction make much sense considering my first prediction? No. Yet I could see it happening anyway.
