No negativity...just naive people really thinking a player would screw themselves over because the team needs that to win.
No one could really think Matthews was going to sign for 9-9.5M a year... |

People thought Matthews was getting 16 million per in Arizona next year. Did we suddenly forget all of that? |

And that imaginary person thought Matthews was going to get 28 million a year from the new expansion team playing in space... |

Are you trying to say people did not say that is happening? Sportsnet had an article about it. LOL |

The Leafs dynasty is over before it ever began. Too much $$ spent on too few. Matthews will walk as a free agent after five years. Each year a player or two will be sacrificed to keep the core together.
As a Leaf fan, I find this disheartening. But then again, every successful team will have this problem going forward |

Don't know, don't care...wasn't me was it. I have been stuck on 22M for both Matthews and Marner for over a year now...
Yet as clearly stated in the blog from one's opinion...
"I think the negativity towards the price of this contract is way overblown."
That means a lot of people think it is too much, not too little, but yes let's talk about the opposite to make you feel better. |

I would have thought 10M for 5, or 12M for 8. But I guess when you look at the % of the cap taken the deal seems reasonable? Surely Nylander gets traded in the off season now? - and can anyone guess at what the team cap numbers will look like when the Marner deal is done - and what are people thinking for him (10M for 8?) |

I would argue that most reasonable NHL/Leaf fans knew as of July 2nd 2018 that AM34 was likely to get Tavares money+ inflation. This was further confirmed 10 games into the season when he had 16 goals. I mean TSN has discussed the Nylander/Matthews/Marner contracts only everyday since the end of the 2017-18 season!
I think the only variable was term. Yes, it would have been nice to see more years. it would have also been nice if they staggered the UFA years for JT, AM, MM, & WN but if wishes were horses....right? |

Can barely even talk about hockey these days, every topic is politics on how teams will be able fit players under cap or not. It's getting ridiculous. |

Best goal scorer in the world??? Did Ovi retire? Powerplay goals count too. |

Five years of Matthews, Tavares, Nylander and most likely Marner. Can't argue with that. I'm willing to think that they will probably end up trading Kappanen in a package this Summer for some extra help on D. We're going to lose either Hainsey, or Gardner or both. Wouldn't be surprised to see Lilygren or Sandin getting a trial with the big club next year. |

The team has the pieces to compete and win for the next 3-4 years. Why not keep your top player happy during that time? Just don't be stupid like LA and give older players bloated contracts past their prime and you'll be good to go. |

First off, Ovechkin is the best goal scorer in the world.
Second, Crosby is the 2nd best player in the world.
Matthews is good/great but he ain’t top 5 yet. |

You cant afford to keep nylander. The whole world knows it. You will have 10 million in cap room to sign at 8 players. Including Kappanen, marner and Johnsson. Marner will cost at least 10 million him self. Even if you get rid of horton contract, you still cant afford him. |

If Marner gets less than 10m OR more than 11.5m, I'd be shocked as well |

That's Toronto's problem, they can figure it out...
Other teams can sit back for the right bargain. |

Going to be cap problems for this team already and they have accomplished nothing. Unless you count making the playoffs |

It will be a giant sack punch to leaf fan if they lose Marner. |
