Next year will be tight for Leafs, and there will be a few salaries that have to go - the most obvious one would b Zaitsev. Nylander is likely here for the long haul - and he should be. Doubt Marleau goes anywhere, but stranger things have happened. The salary cap will go up significantly in the 2020-21 season - with gambling money and Seattle. Next year it will be the third and fourth line players and marginal d-men that are squeezed out of the picture imo. - winsix
Also, why would they want to destroy the depth of the third and fourth line and ruin what they have built all for one guy? |

Marleau could be put on waivers after his bonus, someone trying to get to the cap floor will pick him up.
If he doesn't want to play for that team he retires.
Just a thought. |

The question is what is better for the club, trading away several guys or only one or two to get under the cap. I see a lot of pundits saying they need to get space and trading away Brown, Kap, and/or Johnsson will give them space. For me, all those guys combined will get paid what Nylander makes. So 3 guys leave, and their spots are filled by plugs and minimum salary players? I think keeping those three makes the team better than only keeping Nylander. He just held out for too much money. He should have taken 5 like what he was worth. Shame really. - aminnes

3 or 4 years from now his salary probably looks not bad at all, but the big window is now. Now and the next few years. Who in their right mind would touch Zeitsev? When looking at the team the question is who can they move and actually get a return while also clearing space. Brown - not nearly enough cap. Kap, lose depth and a good Pk guy, plus still not enough cap cleared. Johnson, coming into his own, and could by all rights end up just as good a producer as Nylander for cheaper, is that worth gambling away for a very small amount of cap relief? Someone big has to go, and the only option it looks like is Nylander in the summer, unless there's someone else but. - aminnes
Unless you haven't been paying attention - the salary structure in the NHL has changed dramatically in the last couple of seasons. Young guys are getting paid for their prime years. Just watch how many 30 year olds will get top $ and 8 years this season. Nylander is a keeper. And if Clarkson and Phaneuf can be moved, Zaitsev can be moved.

Marleau as an over 35 contract counts against the cap if he retires. Only a trade or injury (he hasn't missed a game in 10 seasons) would offer cap relief from his salary. Not a chance he is put on waivers. After his bonus is paid the cap hit still applies to any team picking him up. Why would he agree to go to a non-contending team needing to get to the cap? Makes more sense dumping Z's deal.

At the end of the day, this team is losing Gardiner and Hainsay on the back and the back end ain't so hot as it is. Sparks will need a re-up. They have zero cap space without relief. Phaneuf was still capable of playing some decent hockey at the time of the trade. He went on a pretty good run with Ottawa. Zeitsev isn't close to that. If they find a way then that's great, but it still doesn't make enough space to upgrade to d at all. They would have a weaker team next year. Marner is making 11 million next year. Between him Kap, and Johnsson it will likely be 15-16 million added to the payroll. This team will have a weaker roster without some sort of major move, or bunch of smaller ones. I would like to see depth. |
