I don’t make the trade. As CBJ was the only team to give a an NHLer, a first and a second. An overpayment to me. I would have exposed Nuuti and possibly Korpi if need be to keep the picks and Karlson. Clarkson’s contract while not great is also not prohibitive. There was the benefit of freeing up $’s for the Panarin trade but that is also up for debate now. Then again, what the hell do I know? My team sucks.

There was no option in place to not lose a damn good player. CBJ had to lose Karlson, Anderson or Korpisalo after they protected Murray and Wennberg. Jarmo did the best he could at the time, and dumped a terrible contract in Clarkson. People need to quit thinking we could get out of that not losing a real asset, and the picks weren't that high. The question is karlson or Anderson, and that is not that simple a call.

Yeah . . . you gotta trust Jarmo on that one. Using hindsight, you could ask, what if Karllson had been given some conistent playing time on one of top two lines to see how that worked.
Remember - he's the one that drafted PLD, while everyone, and I mean everyone, howled at him for not drafting Puljujarvi. See how that's worked out so far ! Makes you wonder if Jarmo has better EU contacts than everyone else, and knew something about the kid.

William Karlsson is just one of those anomalies and good for him, but no one saw this coming, in fact that entire Vegas over performed, Fleury was deemed too old and done. Collin Miller , Nate Schmidt , Shea Theodore all had overwhelming seasons and they were deemed sixth paired guys I can go on about that group.

Still annoys me to this day people calling out Jarmo on something not even the slightest hockey pundit thought would of happened....

1st off - Poor expansion recap..... How can you recap the expansion draft relative to Columbus position and leave out Minny, Winnipeg and ANA. expansion trades as comparables.

- Minny traded Haula to Vegas to stay away from certain players, and Vegas was still able to pluck Tuch off their lineup.
-ANA . Traded Theodore to Vegas for the guarantee that they would draft a Cap dump D they wanted to get rid of.
-Winnipeg swamped 1st rounders and added a 3rd for the guarantee that Vegas would draft Thorburn ( U.F.A) 0 value player.

The player taken with Clbs. 24th pick Vesalaine (Fin) is killing it and has been deliberately loaned back to Jokert (K.H.L.) so that he can start his E.L.C. next year and then be expansion draft exempt (Seattle). Big loss for Clbs. ..... This loss has to be considered separately. Is Clarkson Cap dump worth losing this pick (Vesalaine).

Karlsson was always one of the options that Vegas may have taken. Does the 2nd rounder givin to Vegas as well to protect Korpo and others to ster Vegas in this direction worth it. ............ No.

If Clbs. Had done nothing and said pick a player from the available list.

Vegas may have picked Johnson with 1 year left to U.F.A. based on their heavy D emphasis of the expansion draft. Looking to trade him for value as they did with Methot from Ottawa..

Clbs. Did a poor job at the expansion draft. One of top 5 losers of the draft. Better luck with Seattle.

In hindsight it looks bad. At the time, I thought it was questionable, as I liked Wild Bill more than Anderson.

That said, at that time I don't think anybody (ANYBODY) thought Bill could be a #1 center in this league. No, Vegas didn't see it coming either.

I had more issues with the lengths CBJ went to to protect Anderson. I think Anderson is a better fit with CBJ, but I'm hoping Jarmo and JD take this as a lesson in the next expansion draft.
