I always think you are opening people's eyes to a side of the game we don't usually think about. I hope you are inspiring at least a few people to give officiating a try.
(I'm way past my prime but, for someone like me who couldn't break an egg with my slapshot, it may have been a way to stay in the game.)

I'd say mentally tough. It helps to have a sense of humor, too. No one enjoys the abuse but it goes with the turf.

Thanks for your contributions, Stewy. Your blogs always offer a unique perspective not readily available elsewhere.

I had the pleasure of meeting Murph and having dinner with him. A good friend of mine has a close friend who is an official and I’ve gotten to meet a few officials and linesman when they come to Philly. Brian was a true gentleman and was only too happy to chat about his life as an official. He gave me a necessary perspective on that side of NHL hockey.
