Two things:

1) This feels a lot like two years ago when Tanner was writing about the Penguins when they eventually beat the Caps, except this time reverse.

2) I completely agree with the second half of his blog and something I touched on previously. The Islanders are not a big scoring club, but they make you pay when you over-commit, especially your defensemen when they pinch.

The Pens need to play, at least to begin the series, a more conservative/boring style of hockey where any dman not named Letang or Schultz hang back to stop the counterattack. They also need to get in the face of Greiss and Lehner, and get those ugly goals. Quantity over quality to start. Pepper them, get rebounds and break their spirit.

Once they break their spirit and the Isles open their game fighting for a goal the Pens can "get to their game."

I think another big issue going into this series is making sure that A Lee is not comfortable in front of Murray...he tends to park himself in front and is tough to move!

My biggest concern is actually the PP and giving up short-handed chances...if they don't stick with a 2 D PP unit it won't be long until they put one in.

The Penguins did the same thing against the Caps when Ron Hainsey was on the top pair. We've all agreed that relying on Vezina-caliber goaltending is not a recipe for long-term success, but in a best-of-7, it's a realistic possibility.

That said, Pens in 6, I just don't see the Isles winning 4 out of 7.

But if the Pens playing a boring ("dull") game, they'll be in a less favorable quadrant of the chart!!!

And what you said about Lehner and Greiss, I'll take it one step further. Early on in the series, I'd be cool with Hornqvist taking a goalie interference penalty or two. I'm not saying barrel into the goalie, but get into the paint, bump him, jostle him around a bit and get him thinking about having to deal with it for an entire series.

keep counting the islanders out.. they are thriving on that energy..... keep telling them they cant run with the penguins.. .... the pens aren't what they used to be... the pens do not have something to prove... the pens...are a match up that DOES NOT scare Trotz or his team.. Isles in 6

That's great, no team should scare any other team.

Pens in 6.

So... you believe the lackluster islanders are favored?

Kudos, you're a moron.

I'm seeing the Pens being equally counted out in other places. Its a wash.

The Penguins will lose more games in this series alone than the Flyers will during their entire playoff run this postseason.

Go ahead, try to disprove it.

Islanders in 3.

We've gotten a lot of posts almost exactly like this one the past 3 years from teams that the Pens beat.

Edit- anything can happen in sports, but I'm comfortable we should be favored.
