Haha. Penguins on the decline. Really glad they blew all those first rounders in recent years and are in cap hell. Gonna be fun to watch the decline and subsequent discussion on where they'll move to when all the fair weather fans abandon ship
- Hextall271

Yet they will still have how many recent cups compared to the flyers ? Post like this crack me up

I’m fine with the hire. I was hoping they would wait a little bit to see whatever coaches might become available after the playoffs but truth be told, alain vigneault is a big fish and we needed a big fish. He has a system. He has along resume of success in the nhl. I know there are some who wanted to keep Scott Gordon. I don’t see why but that’s how they felt. I’m not saying Vigneault is Barry Trotz but Trotz is also a big fish that turned a team around that would likely be nowhere without him.

The Flyers have probably only had 3 to 5 great coaches in it’s franchise’s history.

- SuperSchennBros

Yeah, had they waited someone else probably would've jumped on AV and with our luck no one else of note would have become available and we'd be stuck with Mike Yeo.

I'm excited for AV. He has gotten some good hockey out of some less than stellar rosters.

It's post like that from the pens fan that crack me up. The penguins have recent cups but they're going to pay the piper soon and I'm sorry but that will be sweet.

Furthermore, the pens won consecutive cups and had a dominant squad for years yet fans stayed away in droves when they were tanking and almost moved. That's not something to be proud of but you're entitled to be cracked up.

I dont think he is a horrible coach TBH but he has the benefit of a Jim Carey like performance going on in net right now.

As am I.

He may be the perfect coach for this team as is.

Doesn't mean we cannot bring in a Pinkerton like Hitch when we are knocking on that championship door.

I posted this on Eklund's blog too.

all this paranoia about Vigneault sitting the kids and overplaying the old trusty vets is silly

Chill. Can't happen won't happen. Flyers have almost no older players to overplay.

Their 5 oldest forwards:

31 Giroux
30 Raffl
29 Voracek
29 JVR
26 Couturier

Here's how old their D is:

32 MacDonald
28 Gudas
25 Gostisbehere
24 Hagg
23 Sanheim
23 Morin
22 Provorov
22 Myers

And many of our depth forwards are gonna be young guys like Laughton (24) and Hartman (24) and Lindblom (22). Maybe Bailey (23) or Vorobyev (22). There might even be some younger guys coming up like Frost and Farabee (19 going on 20).

This was the point I was going to make. Unless he plans on playing 8 players all night he has no choice but to play young players. But I also, unlike many people in here, don't want him just handing out unearned ice time.

Some elements of this fanbase crack me up. Our coach sucks, we need a new coach and new players. How about trading for this older player, signing this older player. Team hires a new coach, he sucks, he doesn't handle young players well!
Anytime a coach is fired there is going to be media members who are going to try and show how much smarter they are and point out all the flaws a coach has. The Boruk's and Carchidi's of the hockey world. Meanwhile ignoring all the 100 point seasons and trips to the finals. As if the coach no longer knows how to coach. Every good coach is eventually going to be fired and the same articles will be written about him.

This idea that Vigneault doesn't manage young players well is a media invented narrative that is nonsense.
- MJL

You’re correct. He played Hagelin, Kreider, Hayes, Del Zotto, McDonaugh all plenty in his first couple seasons as coach. I don’t get this narrative

In other words, young players who earned ice time with their play? Pretty much like every coach.

Yup lol. I like the hire a lot and it’s absurd fans (not here specifically) are already writing him off.

Umm...Yes, Nolan Patrick is being groomed to be the next guy after is Giroux gone. Why wouldn’t he be? Patrick is a former second overall pick, who could have potentially went number one and went on to make the team out of camp.

Am I way off base here?

- SuperSchennBros

I don't think you're off base but I think after the previous two years the org and the fans see NoPa as more of a Coots type player than Giroux type player. Obviously coots is a great player and if NoPa ends up like him that's great but I think Frost might be a better future Giroux comparable

Quite possible but in NY he and JT Miller, arguable their star young player, did not seem to get along and he was hesitant to play Skjei and Buchnavich. I don't think AV is a bad coach by any means, and his track record is solid for sure. And the media/crazy fans will make any perceived faults seem 10000x. But it's still okay to have a reasonable concern about it.

However this hire does concern me in this regard: I think Fletch will try to move young players to obtain older players that AV may be more comfortable with instead of allowing the younger players to adapt to AV

Edit: I was wrong about him not playing Skjei. Guess it goes to show that even I can be influenced by the media

Let's look at some simple facts. JT Miller made a steady and solid progression as a young player into a pretty good NHL player. So if Vigneualt didn't handle him well, how did he do that? I don't care if a coach doesn't get along with every player. In fact I'd prefer that a coach not be buddy-buddy with players.
Brady Skjei played over 17 minutes a game as a rookie. 21:02 a game in 17/18, both seasons under Vignneault. How did that happen if he was hesitant to play him?
Buchnevich as a rookie winger, played 13:16 a game. He received PP time. Averaged 1:52 a game on the PP. In his second year under Vigneualt , his ice time went up to 15:01 per game and 2:40 a game on the PP.
