I haven’t seen enough of his play to have a firm perspective on his value - but is Marner worth $10M per year? I know he’s offensively gifted - but does it make sense for Toronto to ink this deal and reinforce an already top-heavy roster?
- Chief4Feathers

He is the best player on the Leafs, Mathews got $10.5, if he signs for anything less he did it as a team friendly deal.

Canes have done well after getting Hamilton away from Ovechkin, and matching Pesce and Faulk against Washington's top line.,

Hmm... well, you gotta pay the player his value - but hometown discounts are few and far between these days - especially when it comes to star players.

Debrincat is 8 million easy. 40 goals is kind of a big deal. Maybe they get away with 7 if they extend him this summer.

I think CAT is more of a 6 mil situational scorer. he does not play much d never plays the PK he is a great goal scorer but he does not really effect the game the way a 8 mil player should.

Exactly, did you notice the defenseman constantly aggressively pinching to keep pucks in KNOWING that the high forward was always back for support.
- LAHawk

Correct.......Their scheme is aggressive but smart and controlled with the forwards coached properly to support as you say. That team just works their asses off every game.

I'm going to respectfully disagree on the goalie situation. If Crawford is 100% healthy, I'd have no problem with giving him another contract. Watching these games with these goalies makes me appreciate Cro even more. He's a winner and not too many, if any, better than him in crunch time. GET HEALTHY CRO !!
- Hawkytalk

Agree. Hawks do not need to make a decision on Crow. If he plays 55+/- games next year at an elite level without concussion issues it is a no brainer. If not you have $6 mil in cap space to find a replacement. In the meantime you hope one of Delia, Forsberg, Lankinen, Nalimov, or Gravel develop into a stud. If they do they are cheap for a couple more years.

Personally I hope they resign Forsberg. I think he is similar to Crow. Fundamentally sound yet slow in developing the mental fortitude. Crow was drafted in 2003. He became a starting goalie for the Hawks in 2010/2011. It took 7 years. From 2005 to 2010 most people thought he would never make it. Even after the 2010/2011 playoff loss to Vancouver and the 2011/2012 playoff loss to Phoenix (where he let in some soft goals in OT) people were questioning whether Crow could win the big playoff series.

I'd love to see him on the PK......... he's fast and smart and might be a diamond in the rough. If they're going to pay him 8 Mil, work him on the PK as well. He can't be any worse than Anisimov and Kruger for goodness sakes. JC needs to find some new players on that horrific PK so why not. Patrick Sharp was one of our best penalty killers back in 2010 because of his speed and smarts. ADB could be the same.

That $ would seem more reasonable - but who do you list as his comp’s if your his agent seeking more?

They need a center on the PK that can win draws (other than Toews), so hopefully you do not have to rely on Toews as much on the PK. Also need players on the PK that can win scrums along the boards to get the puck out of the zone. Hawks PK seems to be the worst in the league in my view in getting the puck out of the zone, especially losing 50/50 board battles.

Constant defensive support needs to be a habit. If key areas are not covered like the points and slot, all players need to be aware of who is best to cover without compromising the other areas they need to vacate.

I thought they were exceptional with ALWAYS getting pucks, handling's pucks, knowing where not was going to go even on the one man in's - that man would always seem to predict his guy was at the blue line wall or wherever and smartly get them the puck while pressured.
This is a combination of good coaching and a large bunch of players (who were delegated with they former teams as low ends, who HAD to play in all situations where
they were pressed to home those parts of their games.

And the zone entires were good but I didn't think they were exceptional. I think the hawks are fast and have gotten pretty good entering, but what was impressive is Vegas made Sharks look slow all night.

- wiz1901

Yep. Great add that I didn’t mention in my post. They didn’t hold on to the puck longer than necessary, and when they felt pressured, they moved the puck exceptionally well to an open player who would have space. A lot of their passes came into areas that they KNEW another teammate IS or WOULD be. That’s what good coaching and chemistry does.

The awareness of their defensemen as well was fantastic. Truly stunning to not see them move on.

DeBrincat could be or already is a volume goal scorer like Brett Hull. How much would Hull in his prime be making in today’s dollars? That may help conceptualize a range for DeBrincat.

DeBrincat isn’t that good defensively. He’d have to improve massively in order to earn PK duties, IMO.

Lie I said call a 2 and 2 on each player, even a 2 and 4 for the "violent act," but I ma pretty sure the refs thought the 5 was going make the end interesting not game changing like it did.
- wiz1901

I'm going to post the video, just for everyone's reference: https://www.youtube.com/w...745w2vJE&feature=youtu.be

Pavelski hadn't regained his balance when the Stastny hit happened. The puck was long gone when the Stastny made the contact. Pavelski was completely vulnerable at this point. Stastny had no business making this hit.

The officials botched it by charging Eakin for the entire sequence, and charging Stastny with nothing. Eakin is guilty of cross checking for two minutes at most. Stastny, however, it's two minutes at the very least for interference or roughing. It could very well have been called a total of 2 and 5 on that sequence.

Still, a pretty tough spot for any official. I think back to the no call on Torres committing attempted murder on Hossa. If they don't see it, how can they call it for sure? And how can they do nothing when something obviously happened? There has to be a video review mechanism set up for these situations. It's that important to get these calls right.

I think Toronto screwed themselves by signing Tavares.

Unless they move a big time player or two up front, they won't have enough cap space to fix that defense, which they will never win a Cup with the way it is manned right now.

Even Reilly their best defenseman is not that great defensively. They would need two studs on the back end and I just don't see how that is going to happen for them.

I always got a kick out of this stat for major penalties and power play goals.

The Sharks had a 5 minute major power play, scored 4 goals, and only went 4 for 5. Shouldn't the stat be 4 for 1 on the power play?

What size sweetener could the Hawks get for taking Marleau? He's got one year left at $6.25M. Hawks don't have to pay the kids until the next year. That would be huge for the Leaves. Maybe Kapanen?

they haven't done that at all.

It's entirely circumstantial. Brind'amour doesn't match lines and Dougie's been just fine.

The other thing about taking Eakin off the ice for 5 minutes is that he is their top PK guy.

Ohhhh... I like that train of thought. Marleau have enough in the tank to ride shotgun with Toews and Kane? He def has lost a step.

He wouldn't have to do much besides rip one timers and hang around the net.

Man I love playoff hockey....

I don't get the continued love for Babcock. Has yet to win a series in Toronto, has a very young talented team, has some holes on D, but with that group he should have won a series by now. How is he not being questioned or rumored to be replaced? Guy blows a LOT of leads in series and have to question his ability to make in game matchup decisions. Yes, he won in Detroit with a LOADED team he had no part of making, and yes he won with team CANADA with another loaded team...…

Pavelski got driven a bit into the ice and probably should have been a 4 minute penalty but wonder if he wasn't wearing a pseudo cage if he bleeds at all? Oh well....Vegas blew a 3-1 lead. Shark tank was going bananas and what a response when you see your captain hurt. Amazing game.....hard to top that one.

Pulling for the Caps tonight. Love Ovechkin and Carolina is about to experience what Tampa did last year in Games 6 and 7.....an angry Caps team. I don't see a young team handling that at all on the road.

As far as deals go for Hawks? What are they trading to get pry away some top RFA talent? This team needs defensive help badly if they want to be 1 of 16 in the dance next April
