[quote=bhawks2241]Ohhhh... I like that train of thought. Marleau have enough in the tank to ride shotgun with Toews and Kane? He def has lost a step.

He wouldn't have to do much besides rip one timers and hang around the net.

Maybe it was just me but Marleau looked invisible for much of that series. HARD PASS....enough of bringing in aging vets on 1 year deals and hoping for Brad Richards when in reality you get Campbell, Kunitz, Sharp...…….

I think Toronto screwed themselves by signing Tavares.

Unless they move a big time player or two up front, they won't have enough cap space to fix that defense, which they will never win a Cup with the way it is manned right now.

Even Reilly their best defenseman is not that great defensively. They would need two studs on the back end and I just don't see how that is going to happen for them.

- hereismike1

They screwed themselves by giving into Worthless Willie Nylander not John Tavares. That useless Swede did nothing all season and duplicated his un-exceptionalness in the playoffs. And now he is virtually immovable without tossing in a big sweetener.

And like the Hawks, the Leafs lack the requisite mix of size and toughness that must go with the talent and skill individuals. It's a team game after all.

they haven't done that at all.

It's entirely circumstantial. Brind'amour doesn't match lines and Dougie's been just fine.

The other thing about taking Eakin off the ice for 5 minutes is that he is their top PK guy.
- LAHawk

Yeah... if you watch the replays Couture is livid at Statsny. No reason for him to push Pavelski to the ice. That a dangerous play.. I don't care how hard Statsny pushed him.

Its the same thing as giving a guy a little shove in the back while he is off balance along the boards. I would've been fine with 2mins on Eakin and a 5min on Statsny.

Nada. He continues to sit at home waiting for his contract to be bought out.

...potentially... they may just hold on to him too so that the cap hit comes off after next year instead of having a lesser hit for two more years.

Stastny was skating to the point and is entitled to that ice as well. He wasn't even looking at Pavelski.

Hell Couture was the one that interfered briefly with Stastny causing him to go inside and run into Pavelski

Since this isn't reviewable by replay, and obvious that none of the officials on the ice saw what happened, you can't call phantom penalties if you didn't see it. Or have the rules changed since Torres almost decapitated Hossa?

He is the best player on the Leafs, Mathews got $10.5, if he signs for anything less he did it as a team friendly deal.
- LAHawk

According to CapFriendly Matthews will be making $11.6 plus next year.

Four of the teams with the most serious cap problems this summer, Tampa Bay, Toronto, Vegas, and Winnipeg all ousted in the first round of the playoffs. They will have to shed a few depth players each and bring in a bunch of prospects on ELC's or veterans on cheap contracts, making their quest for the Cup next year a little bit harder.
- boilermaker100

I'm beginning to wonder, with the number of teams that are at or near the cap, the teams that have self-imposed caps, that cap not going up that much each year, and the high dollars "above average" players are making these days, will we start to see more instances like MLB where a number of higher end players either get low-balled, or not even offered a contract with teams filling out their lower lines with ELC's or other low cost players.

Stan seems to be pulling in at least one Euro-type player each year. Some are bigger hits than others, but he is continually bringing in more low cost players each year. He already flat out said that he expects Kubalik to make the team next year and be a contributor.

Nice take. I will be honing in on individual teams (like the ones you listed) in future blogs to discuss potential targets through trades.

It's damn tough to win and those teams above have some thinking to do about what went wrong and where they can improve. Will the moves be drastic or will they be salary dumps to stay the course?

Interesting to see and excited to share my thoughts in coming months.

The vegas trade makes the most sense eakin and McNabb for forsling and 2020 3rd or 2nd then AA for picks 20203rd and 2019 3rd. I would hold onto hayden and sikrua unless those are deal breakers the more depth hawks have the better. Maybe saad sikrua one prize young d man for another top 4 d man or if the vegas trade does not come to fruition.

I would rather take Horton's $5.3 mil LTIR off their books, if we need to add a player after day 1 we have that cap hit available.

I can see that. I think, though, that Marleau brings a bigger sweetener because of Horton's LTIR status.

It's an idea in theory, but the NHL GM's / owners have shown zero ability to collude and reign themselves in with free agents in the past so I would not expect that ability to surface anytime soon.

Eventually some GM is going to diverge away from the high-priced “core” model and do something along the lines of a “money puck” model. Just keep churning a roster with mid-tier and entry-level players and trading those away who warrant a big increase ahead of time to keep driving the process. Some could say this has already been done - but I don’t count cheap/broke owners as a real strategy.
