Now that I’ve gone back and read the blog, I say great job Tyler. As far a how to make the PK better, I say just show the PK players, that five minute PK that Vegas employed. Then tell them do anything you want except this!

One epic meltdown, that probably wasn't deserved.

Part of the problem with the Vegas meltdown was that their 2 top PK forwards (Bellamare unavailable and Eakins serving the penalty) were not on the ice.

So, in the 18-19 regular season, Danault was the 5th forward PKer in ice time and Hjalmarsson was 3rd for D?

Wow, it's too bad the Blackhawks couldn't get guys like that on their roster.

Come free agency, Hawks need 2-3 bottom 6 guys who can take draws and play the PK. Then need a PK D who will block shots. Need some serious role players in that bottom 6 and bottom D pairing. One thing is very evident watching the playoffs. Size/speed all over the place.

This is an interesting read - thanks Justin.

I wonder how much of the Hawks available cap space they’ll devote to improve the 3rd/4th lines and PK via free agency this off-season? Or, perhaps indirectly by adding to the top-six and slotting others downward?

In addition to Size/Speed, the other thing that is VERY evident is guys that are willing to take the body in a board battle - all over the ice!!!!

Interesting thing about these playoffs...how many upsets were there really? Not a deep analysis, but I sorted the teams based on how many points they earned in the standings (total) down the stretch from Feb 1st 2019 until the end of the season.

Here is how it shakes out...

STL 2nd - Def - WPG 21st
BOS 3rd - Def - TOR 12th
CAR 4th - Def - WSH 5th
NYI 6th - Def - PIT 7th
CBJ 8th - Def - TBL 1st
DAL 10th - Def - NSH 16th
COL 13th - Def - CAL 15th
SJ 14th - Def - VGK 20th

Most of the teams that won were hotter in that last ~30 games or so.

Forgot to add, in this type of ranking, the Hawks were 9th.

Thanks for the research. You are correct, for instance, that Columbus team was completely different after the trade deadline additions than what they were the majority of the regular season.

“Best player available” is a leading mantra for drafting in any round so not looking at positions but skill sets, work ethic, consistency, hockey sense, and other intangibles.

With that in mind, one priority for draft day should be seeking prospects (skaters at least) who are excellent defenders and penalty killers. This would go for all rounds.

It would be nice, too, if the Hawks could acquire another 1st rounder to nab a Danault type forward or a Hjalmarsson type blueliner in the latter half of the round.

Sign Ilya Mikeheyev 6-2 200 lbs and Pk's, for the 4th line. sign Kubalik for the 3rd line 6-2 as well, sign somebody to play 3rd line center, trade Forsling and hayden AA. Let Seabs, Dahlsrom koeke battle for 7th D. draft Bowen and pencil him in the lineup day 1. and be open to trading SAAD, GUS, Keith Boquist Crawford for the right offer. Also if you get a great offer for #3 and can move down to 5-9 consider it.

Sign Kevin hayes for 5 year 6 mil.
Sign darling after his buyout 3 year $750K
Sign Forsberg 3 year 1Mil with a euro out.
Sign perlini to a 3 year deal, Kahun 3 year deal, Kampf 2 years.

I'm on the Bowen train at #3 nothing happened at he worlds that has convinced me that Turcotte is really in a different level then Zegras, Cozens, Krebs, Pods, Dach.

Keith and Craw you might be able to trade to FL is my thought. AA, Gus to Caroline or AZ, Gus or boquist to TOR JETS Vegas. SAAD jets Caro, Pitt,

what about SAAD, Keith and Craw for Reimer, huberdeau and matheson?

We need two C that are a +50% at the dot to help on draws. Outside of the Captain, we are a weak face off team.

I wonder how much that plays into the decision at that stage of development. I get what you mean about wanting some defensively responsible players. What sticks in my mind is often hearing teams talk about drafting players with good fundamentals with the expectation that they will learn the defensive game at a pro level. I'm not saying there aren't aspects of it in the scouting, but it doesn't seem to be often what they focus on.

I agree with you on how it would be nice to find some guys who are good away from the puck. I think that is where some of the guys from Sweden tend to shine and I bet we'll see more of the same from the Hawks taking 1 or 2 guys from there.

Can’t remember where I read it, but I read somewhere that team’s individual interviews at the combine and throughout the lead up to the draft with prospects play a critical role in team’s decisions on picks.

I remember in past drafts after the Hawks made their picks then getting frustrated reading scouting reports on some of those selected because many of those reports would say things like needs to be better without the puck, be stronger defensively, etc.

Just as a example, Danault right away in juniors was billed as a stellar defensive forward with a nonstop motor, relentlessness, and high hockey IQ. He’s an example of prospects to consider, not just the top shelf offensive dynamos or smooth puck movers.

Subban at $9M a year? Good way to find the Hawks in cap hell in a big hurry.

Barratt, Entwhistle, Hagel, Kurashev, and Reese Johnson are all in that mold to some extent no?

No 100% on Kurashev but the rest are high energy guys with some skill. I know Hagel is older but I think Bowman is looking to find those bottom 6 energy guys that can also score a bit.

Plus, he sucks.
Might be most overrated NHL D-man.
We've got quite a few that suck, don't need another at $9M for however how much longer his contract runs.

Reimer is cash dump and I would probably send him to Rockford. his salary down there would be 1/2 offset by the savings on the other 2 trades. I would hope that Delia, Forsberg or Darling could man the fort. because after next year when Cat and strome are extended that is all we will be able to afford for a few years. Hubrdeau is a big upgrade over SAAD plus cost controlled. matheson is a slight downgrade from Keith but over time that will probably switch. Craw is a upgrade over reamer and he free's up cash for FL in 1 year.

it was a example. we get younger and cost controlled.
