I hope Fox is the next coming of Tim Erixon for the Rangers and gets traded from his beloved team.

I really wish the league changed the rules which allow drafted College Players to become free agents and play wherever they choose.

Given the situation the Canes were in and Fox was going to sign with the Rangers anyway, I’ll definitely take the 37th overall pick and likely a 2020 2nd (contingent on the 30 GP) for a kid who wasn’t gonna sign.

Yeah it sucks, but with the defense the Canes have now, Fox wouldn’t have made the team for a while barring a trade. Throw in how well Jake Bean has developed this past AHL season, he’s a drop in the bucket.

Wish him the best, hope we snag someone like Maxim Cajkovic with that pick.

He was drafted by the Flames. He indicated that he would not sign there - so he was traded to the Canes, he indicated that he wouldn't sign there, so he is now in New York, which is where he wanted to be all along.

I have no problem with a UFA who has been in the league for awhile who picks where he wants to play - but for a kid recently drafted who has not played one NHL game, or not even 1 pro game, to have these same benefits is just wrong.

The Canes traded him because they need to get something for him before he walks as a free agent because the team with his rights (Canes before the trade) can't sign him, because he wants to choose where he plays.

Tim Erixon (draft pick of the Flames) did the same thing several years ago and got himself to New York. He was traded to the Jackets not too long after, and is now a bust.

Yep! Considering he was basically a toss in, in the Calgary/Carolina trade. And wasn't going to sign with Carolina I'd say management did a great job in acquiring picks instead of getting nothing.

Will Butcher has been pretty good.

Some of these guys are quality players and the league should decide how it wants to deal with them. If it does.

In the grand scheme of things, it really isn't an issue, and its tough b/c the NHL can't really penalize a player who wants to graduate from college. Only way is to make it like other sports where once you opt for the draft, you can't play in college.

Was butcher drafted and then became UFA? Or did he go undrafted?

To me there is a a big difference. If a team drafts someone than their first 3-4 years of pro hockey should be with that team. Regardless of how soon after the draft those years come.
