Offer sheets are stupid? The Sharks gave offer sheets to Hjalmarsson and Niemi and the Hawks were unable to sign both. So the Sharks not only ended up with a goalie they wanted but they forced Chicago to pay more for Hjalmarsson than they wanted weakening the Blackhawks in the process. And please point to some fact that supports your contention Hjalmarsson was viewed as a "traitor". But as usual your blogs aren't about fact they are about trying to generate lots of traffic which they never do.

Go to the hawk site and learn from Tyler on how to write an interesting blog using nothing more than interesting topics, good writing skills, facts, and avoiding pretending to be a hockey insider or know more than you actually do.

The first comment is pretty spot on. The agents do a lot of work for these guys
Agent: hey, we just got an offer sheet from Xxxxxxxxx. If you sign it, it’s more than they would’ve signed you for but they’re likely going to match it anyways. So you get MORE money and get to stay with your buds or you can refuse and likely end up with less money, oh and you might miss training camp and part of the season and it might effect your relationship with your coach and teammates. What would you like to do?

Lol at players worried about teams thinking they're traitors. When teams screw over players, it's just business. When a player tries to maximize their earnings, they're traitors?

Eliminate all the RFA rules, give every player an automatic NMC, and don't let teams buy out players anymore. Then we can worry about players being traitors.

And get your head out of your Toronto bubble. Everyone's been talking about those RFAs you've mentioned getting poached just as much as Marner. The reason Toronto is rightfully so worried about Marner is they're the only team that's in a position where they're going to have to commit 40 million to 4 forwards.

"So to sum up, there is a better chance that I'll read that J.K Rowling book with Zero Wizards (I think that might even be the title) than there actually being an offer sheet."

If I could add to this I would simply note that Toronto put themselves in this position by signing JT and Marleau. JT was terrific for them and should continue to be. It’s a good problem to have. Much better than being in AZ where the team has struggled for years without getting a generational talent, they have money issues, and it’s not a hotbed for free agents - although it could certainly become one. The Scottsdale practice rink is nice enough and the players like the Scottsdale area. Lots of players and former players have second homes here. Anywho, carry on

James what about second tier players. For example the Leafs after they sign Marner won't have a ton of money. Someone could offer Kappanen or Johnsson 4 million bucks a year and it will only cost them a second rnd pick which would be a steal.

The "Offersheet" discussion might be the most ridiculous I have ever seen. I don't mind it being talked about during the lazy days of summer when not much is going on, but I feel the media ignored a lot of the Leafs actual season to discuss offersheet drama.
Darren Dreger has been absolutely ridiculous. I pray there's 0 offersheets (I feel there will be none), so he can look like such a fool.

No offersheets for 6 years, yet every single Leaf RFA (And only Leaf RFA) is goners.

The funny thing is non-Leaf fans tell me the national media "Caters" to Leaf fans. LOL okay...

No they have not. He's talking about the "national media". You must be joking if you think Aho got as much hype for an offersheet as Matthews before he signed or Marner.
Sportsnet has had offersheet articles on all Leaf RFAs, including Kapanen and Johnsson. It's 95% about Leaf RFAs. And why/ Because it brings in viewers/readers.

BTW, a great moment was when Friedman could not wait to announce an NHL general manager told him he'd bet his house Lou is giving an offerheet to Marner or Matthews and then less than 24 hours later Lou acquired Matt Martin and saved the Leafs 5 million in cap space.
Some of these unnamed "NHL execs" are morons.

Guys like Dreger getting the "11.5" it's from Marner's agent and his father. He is being used and is too dumb to realize it.

He specifically said he was talking about the local coverage. And the local coverage for all teams with big time RFAs who aren't in the playoffs are talking about their big time RFAs because what else are they going to talk about.

The problem is, his "Market" is also the national market in terms of media.
Do a search of offersheets subjects and get back to me. Sportsnet, TSN etc never discuss Point, Aho or Laine. It's all Leaf players only.
I understand why, it's due to the fact Leaf discussion equals eyeballs, but it's been really stupid this year.

And what does not being in the playoffs matter? Offersheets were discussed all year.

I sense you aren't aware how much it was discussed this year.

They do, that’s why they’re talking about leaves players. Catering to them means selling them stories they will read not good news for them.

It's meant for the non-Leaf fans. leaf fans will certainly read positive stories.

That is such a massive overpayment for a second year player who is RFA that there isn't any chance it happens.

No that guy is right, but see we live in Toronto so our local coverage and the national coverage are pretty much the same.

you really think a second round pick is a massive over payment for a 20 goal scorer with outstanding speed, or are you referring to the 4 million offer?

Trading a second rounder for either of these players would be a steal. Paying either an AAV of 4 million would not

One thing that drove me nuts is the day after Marner had that fantastic game 2 in the Boston series, Darren Dreger got on TSN radio and his first line? : "Can you say Offersheet?"
Honestly it was so obnoxious and ridiculous. He could not get away with that in any other market.
The night after a playoff game, let's talk offersheets!
